August 2013 Wilson Center Newsletter

Rucker Snead The Wilson Center team is looking forward to another exciting and productive year of "Preparing Men of Character for Lives of Consequence." We have started the leadership transition at the Center. After over 35 years of service to our College and over 20 years with the Center, Dr. David Marion has started his well-deserved phase retirement. I am honored to have been selected to serve as the new Director of the Wilson Center.  I am not going to replace Dr. Marion. No one can replace him and the tremendous role that he has played in creating and shaping the Center since its inception. However, rest assured that we are not letting him escape. Dr. Marion will continue teaching, working with our students, and serving as the Director of the Public Service Program. Over the years, under his and General Wilson's leadership, the collaborative efforts of the Wilson Center faculty, alumni and students have enhanced the regional, national, and even international visibility of the Center and our College. We plan to expand on these efforts in the coming years as we have a full slate of programs planned for this fall. Below are highlights of just a few of our upcoming events. As we look forward to the new year, you may be assured that our commitment to the Wilson Center's leadership, public service, and national security programs, effectively preparing young men for principled citizenship and leadership, has never been stronger. Again, I am honored to serve as the next Director. I hope to see you back at the Wilson Center this fall.

Summer Internships

Baker Allen '14Baker Allen '14, Intern in the office of the Governor of Alabama
Baker Allen characterized his summer internship in the office of the Governor of Alabama as a "once in a lifetime experience." Not only did he develop the skills, but he also claims that he learned, first-hand what it means to be  a "team player."

Connor Crowley '14 Connor Crowley '14, Intern for Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Rep VA)
Connor Crowley's six weeks working in a congressional office on Capitol Hill broadened his knowledge about the place and role of Congress in the federal governmental system. His work behind the scenes helped him realize that working in a Congressional office is definitely something he would like to do as a career.

Trey Price '14Trey Price '14, Intern for the Fulbright Commission
While in Prague, Trey Price became educated on social programs and child welfare programs within the country.  His summer experience, combined with his education at H-SC, will enhance his ability to serve and protect children in the legal system, an issue of great importance to Trey.

According to Trey, that the most surprising part of his internship was "not the work I completed as part of my internship, but the connections I made outside of it."
