Stephen H. Martin '67 on Leadership

On Sunday, September 23, Stephen Martin spoke to 24 students from the Freshmen Leaderhip Program.  His talk was informative and inspirational.  Stephen, along with his brother David, are founders of the famed Martin Agency in Richmond.  Stephen graduated from Hampden-Sydney in 1967, fifteen years after David finished.  Besides creating successful advertising, Steve enjoys writing books.  He left the marketing communications business several years ago to try his hand at writing fulltime. Several of his titles have won top book industry awards. He is, for example, the only three-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award, having won twice for fiction and once for nonfiction. He also has won first prize for fiction from Independent Publisher and first prize for nonfiction from USA Book News.

2012 Pre-Orientation Workshop for the Freshmen Leadership Program

Congratulations to the following freshmen who have been accepted into the Freshmen Leadership Program.  These students kicked off their academic year with a two-day workshop featuring sessions that ranged from leadership opportunities on campus to a viewing of Black Hawk Down that was followed by discussions with Lt. General William Boykin and Lt. General Samuel Wilson.  On the second day, Dr. Curt Smith led a simulation exercise based on a Harvard case study of a tragic expedition to Mt. Everest in 1996.  Throughout the school year, students enrolled in the program will take part in a series of seminars, workshops and special events.
