Hampden-Sydney Veteran's Day Ceremony
November 11, 2012
Hampden-Sydney's student organization, the Society for the Preservation of Southern Heritage, hosted its 14th annual Veteran's Day Ceremony at Memorial Gate on the College campus on Sunday, November 11, 2012. Approximately, 50 people were in attendance for the ceremony. Dr. Lee Anthony, Captain USNR (retired) and proprietor of Physics Associates of Roanoke, Virginia, was the guest speaker.
Dr. Anthony has over 33 years of military service and has been employed at Roanoke College as a professor of physics and department head. His father, Private Lee Anthony was a member of Company F, 317th Infantry Regiment A.E.F., who served in World War I and was wounded on October 4, 1918. Dr. Anthony spoke about the history of Veteran's Day which began as Armistice Day when World War I officially came to an end on "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. He also commented on the valuable service American veterans and service men and women have given this country from the French and Indian War up to the present with the global war on terrorism.
During the ceremony, the officers of the Southern Heritage Society read the names of all Hampden-Sydney men who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the American Revolution, the War Between the States, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and those service men who are currently serving our nation. Following the reading of names, the Charlotte County American Legion Post #260 provided a 21-gun salute; Carol Behoff, a sophomore at Fuqua School, played taps; and the Longwood University/Hampden-Sydney College ROTC presented the colors.
