Washington DC Trip 2011

Wilson Center Annual Trip to Washington, DC dc

On November 15, thirty students in the Public Service Program and the Pre-Law Society boarded a bus for the annual "trip to Capitol Hill."   The day was filled with sessions on topics ranging from the work of the 'supercommittee,' to global development issues to general congressional affairs, to immigration and homeland security.  The students were given a bird's eye view of what it is like to work on the Hill by HSC alumni.  They were treated to an impromptu visit from our distinguished alumnus, Congressman Robert Hurt '95.  Hurt represents Virginia's 5th District in the House of Representatives--a district that includes the campus of Hampden-Sydney College.
The DC Alumni Club held its Fall get-together at Morgan Stanley's DC conference center thanks to George Albright '74.  Located on the corner of Lafayette Park, the view of the White House from the ninth floor conference center was spectacular.  The guest speaker for the event was Eric Schmitt, a New York Times Journalist and co-author of Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America's Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda.  The Wilson Center staff was on hand to introduce alumni to the students and facilitate the sale of signed copies of Schmitt's book. Over 90 alumni and guests enjoyed an abundance of delicious food courtesy of Bill Howard '77, president of the DC Alumni Club Andrew Freitas '92 and our alumni office provided pizzas for the bus ride home to campus.  Many students travelled back to campus with several business cards and even offers of summer internships.
