Wilson Center Newsletter

May 2012 Volume 6 Issue 4

MarionAlthough the 2011-12 academic year has not yet come to an end (the summer college will take place during the first weekend in June and May Term classes will be in session until mid-June), the Wilson Center already is in full planning mode for the 2012-13 academic year.  The achievements of the last year would not have been possible without the generous support that we received from alumni and friends of the college, and especially from the faculty oversight committee and the Wilson Center Advisory Board.  We will be relying on all of our benefactors to insure that 2012-13 is another fruitful year for the Center.

The 2012-13 academic year promises to be both busy and exciting.   The Center's pre-orientation leadership seminar for incoming freshmen will take place on August 23-24, followed quickly by our 9/11 anniversary program that will feature a keynote address by retired Ambassador Eric Edelman on September 10.  Professor William Connelly of Washington and Lee University, the author of a recent book entitled James Madison Rules America, will deliver the Constitution Day Address on September 17, and Dr. James Ceaser, a highly acclaimed scholar on the presidency and presidential elections, will visit in October.  Our annual trip to Capitol Hill will take place in mid-November.  These are only some of the events planned for the fall semester.  The 2012-13 academic year will not be without challenges as we begin to implement several new initiatives (e.g., Wilson Center Student Fellowships and a Wilson Center Visiting Fellows Program) and transition to new leadership on January 1.

This month's newsletter reviews some of the major events of the spring semester with special attention to the achievements of our students.  Wilson Center students garnered some of the top awards at this year's convocation ceremony in April and several were commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps during commencement exercises on May 13.  Our summer interns are beginning to take on their assigned duties with the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Fulbright Office in Prague, the National Academy of Public Administration and the United States Agency for International Development in Washington as well as with educational, political, environmental and non-profit organizations in Massachusetts, Iowa, South Carolina, and Virginia.  We are proud of the achievements of our young men and look forward to reporting on their accomplishments in our September newsletter.

The faculty and staff of the Center are united in the belief that the preparation of young men to be thoughtful and principled citizens and leaders, equipped with the skills and knowledge to advance the cause of freedom and civilization in this country and around the globe, is unquestionably a matter of national importance.  As always, we encourage you to visit our website for regularly updated reports on Wilson Center programs.
