SPRING SYMPOSIUM

Biology Symposium poster

"Adventures in Deep Time: The Search for Early Life"

The Biology Department's Spring Symposium will bring to campus three distinguished paleontologists with international reputations not just as scientists but as compelling speakers who can communicate their exciting discoveries to the public.

Each of them will give two talks -- a seminar for our biology students and serious paleontology fans, and an evening public lecture highlighting the great adventure of paleontology.

The Biology and Fine Arts Departments are very lucky to be able to bring back to campus writer/composer/performer Claudia Stevens, who will present one of the first performances of her original monodrama, "Blue Lias, or the Fish-Lizard's Whore." This play, with original music by noted composer Allen Shearer, tells the story of Mary Anning, who discovered the amazing fossils of the Blue Lias near Lyme Regis in England, and who may have been the model for John Fowles' "The French Lieutenant's Woman."

Of all life-forms that ever existed on Earth, 99.999 percent are already extinct. Paleontology—the study of ancient life—is the key to understanding not only the history of life, but to uncovering valuable clues to its present and future.

An exhibit of David Dodge Lewis' latest paintings, "The Evolution Series," which features thought-provoking juxtapositions of fossils, flowers and enigmatic symbols, will be displayed at the Atkinson Museum beginning March 26 as well.
