MATTHEW R. DUBROFF, LECTURER IN FINE ARTS
A FOUNDING member
of the Theatre Nohgaku, the only Noh theatre English-language
troupe in operation, Lecturer in Fine
Arts Matthew R. Dubroff
traveled with the group to Granite Falls, Washington, in the
spring of 2005 to perform in the premiere
production of Crazy Jane at the Tsubaki Shrine. Later that year the troupe toured to the North
Carolina School of Arts (NCSA) in Winston-
Salem to perform in a recital of Noh in English
and Japanese in anticipation of a larger tour the
following year.
During the summer and fall of 2006,
Dubroff rehearsed a new English Noh play,
Pine Barrens, with a recital performance in
Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, followed by a
residency and world premiere at NCSA. Dubroff
helped to coordinate funding and logistics for
the subsequent residency and performance
tour, which traveled to Duke University and Hampden-Sydney College.
Dubroff participated in the first rehearsal
process of the next play in the cycle of New
Jersey-themed Noh plays, preliminarily entitled
Noh Jersey, in the summer of 2007. The play is
slated for another rehearsal and a tour in 2008.
In other professional activities, Dubroff was
the head coordinator for the Annual General
Meeting of the American Society for the
Alexander Technique in the summer of 2005.
Th is week-long conference was held at the Omni
Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, and included 250
attendees participating in business meetings and
over forty workshops given by teachers from
around the world.
Dubroff has taught at the College since 1999,
having received his B.A. from Williams College
and his M.F.A. from the University of Hawaii at
Manoa. In addition to teaching, he occasionally
directs student productions at the College.
