DAVID DODGE LEWIS, ELLIOTT PROFESSOR OF FINE ARTS

THE DRAWINGS of Elliott Professor of Fine Arts David Dodge Lewis have appeared recently in Drawn Diversely, an Invitational Group Exhibition at Elon University in North Carolina; the Virginia Invitational Works on Paper in Charlottesville; an exhibition entitled Selected Works from the Permanent Collection of the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center in Hampton, Virginia; the Alumni Invitational at East Carolina University; and in the Northern National Juried Art Competition at the Nicolet College Art Gallery in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where his entry won the Rajak Donor Award.

Paintings from Lewis’ Evolution Series have appeared in Hand to Hand, an Invitational Hand group exhibition at Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, in 2006, and in Fossils and Flowers: The Evolution Series, a solo exhibition at the Atkinson Museum in conjunction with last spring’s symposium on paleontology at Hampden-Sydney College.

Lewis has had several portrait commissions since 2005, and in 2006 one of his portraits won a merit award at Images 2006, a national juried 2006 competition at Pennsylvania State University. In the fall two of his portraits were in the National Portrait Exhibition at Impact Artists’ Gallery in Buff alo, New York. He spent the summer of 2007 working on a book on portraiture, thanks to a summer fellowship from Hampden-Sydney College.

In the past three years, Lewis has also presented workshops on his drawing technique at Elon University; the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina; the Art Students’ League of New York; and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

Lewis, who is on leave this year, received his B.S. from the University of Southern Maine, and his M.A. and M.F.A. from East Carolina University. He has taught at the College since 1987, and in 2006 he received the College’s John Peter Mettauer Award for Excellence in Research for his work.
