The AHA (Academics and High Adventure) Program in Downeast Maine offers students the opportunity to engage in both academic and adventure programs in a unique area of the United States.  The program is open to all students who will have completed Rhetoric 102 or its equivalent prior to the start of the program.

2019 Itinerary (subject to change) 

  • July 28: Arrival in Bangor, Maine
  • Jul 28-Aug 13: Classes and field-based programming
  • Aug 14: Departure
  • Aug 18: Final project due online

Students will be housed in a variety of shared spaces: in tents in a campground (Mt. Desert Island); cottages (Roque Bluffs and Beals Island, Maine); in a dorm at the Downeast Institute on Great Wass Island, Maine; in an “off the grid” community of yurts (Dickinsons Reach in Machiasport, Maine); in tents while backpacking on the Bold Coast Trail system outside of Cutler, Maine; and in tents on one or more islands that are a part of the Maine Island Trail system in the Bay of Maine (weather permitting).

Transportation to and from Maine is not covered by the program.  Students are to meet the group at at Bangor International Airport, Bangor Maine or 595 Duck Cove Rd, Roque Bluffs, Maine by 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 28.  Students who drive will need to arrange for parking at 595 Duck Cove Rd., Roque Bluffs, Maine for the duration of the program.  Transportation in group vans during the program will be covered.

This program is a tobacco-free program.  No smoking, dipping, or vaping are allowed.

This is a rugged, outdoors program in the chilly northeast.  Participants must be in a phyiscal condition that allows them to climb stairs, walk long distances while carrying a backpack, and participate in the following adventure activitites: sea kayaking, hiking, backpacking, bike riding, and riding on a boat in open water.  (No previous experience is needed for these activities.)

Students are advised to schedule an appointment with their primary care physician or health provider several weeks before departure to obtain any recommended and/or required vaccines or immunizations.  Students are responsible for ensuring that all routine travel and immunizations are up-to-date.

The $3215 cost will cover tuition, housing, program transportation, entrance fees, and some group meals. The fee does not include transportation to/from the program, textbooks, most meals/snacks, and personal expenditures.
