Professor Warner Winborne left the service of the College in July 2007 to serve a one-year term as a contract firefighter in Iraq. From July 2007 through July 2008, Dr. Winborne exchanged academic regalia for turnout coat, helmet, boots and bunker pants, and worked at CSC Scania, a small military base about 100 miles south of Baghdad. During this time, Dr. Winborne provided fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials remediation and emergency medical services to the coalition forces, civilian contractors, and local and third-country nationals who lived and worked on the base. In July 2008, Dr. Winborne returned to his many duties at Hampden-Sydney College.
