Greek Literature in Translation
Reading and discussion of major works of
classical Greek literature. Literary themes and techniques are considered, as
well as the influence of Greek writings on later literature. No knowledge of
Greek is required. On our trip abroad, we will visit many of the sites featured
in the assigned literature. Satisfies core literature requirement.

Elements of
Monotheistic Religion in Greece and Turkey
This course will
examine pivotal moments in the relationship between Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam between and first and fifteenth centuries C.E. in the Middle East and
Greece. Topics will include the early relationship between Judaism and
Christianity, the Roman destruction of the Jewish temple, St. Paul and the
Christian missionary movement, the development of the doctrine of the trinity,
the rise of Islam, theology of icons, the Crusades, and the Fall of
Constantinople. We will visit several sites associated with these “moments”
including Athens, Istanbul, and Iznik (Nicaea). Prerequisite: none.
