HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE seeks to meet the needs of a variety of students in its May Term. Courses offered are either from the regular offerings of Hampden-Sydney, or they are experimental in content or presentation. A student may enroll in a maximum of two courses (excluding corequisite laboratories).

Students in good standing at Hampden-Sydney College or other colleges are eligible for admission to May Term. High school juniors and seniors may be admitted upon the recommendation of their guidance counselor or principal.

Admission to May Term in no way ensures admission toward a degree at Hampden-Sydney College. Hours of credit and quality points earned by Hampden-Sydney students during the May Term will apply toward their degree programs. Credit may also be transferred to other institutions with their approval.

   APPLICATION

Currently enrolled Hampden-Sydney College students should register on-line for May Term 2008 courses via the College's Tiger Web using their ID number and current PIN and also should complete a May Term 2008 Housing Application Form if they desire on-campus housing.  (Note: Students registering for May Term 2008 abroad programs cannot register on-line, but instead should contact Ms. Mary Cooper, the College's Director of International Studies, about May Term abroad opportunities and registration.)  After logging on to the Tiger Web, be sure to use the drop-down menu in the "Selected Term" window to select "Summer 2007-2008" as the term and then click on the "Change" button.  If you then select "All" in the "Return Courses" window and hit the "Search" button, you will see a full list of May Term 2008 courses.

Other students who are not enrolled at Hampden-Sydney may apply to attend May Term 2008 by completing this application form.

   READMISSION POLICY
Hampden-Sydney students who have been dismissed for academic reasons, or who are not in attendance during the spring semester of the academic year 2007-2008, must be readmitted to Hampden-Sydney College as regular students before they will be admitted to May Term. This application for readmission must be filed with the Dean of Admissions by April 1, 2008.

   REGISTRATION

All students must attend registration in Parents and Friends Lounge (Venable Hall) on Monday, May 19, 2008, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Students should be prepared to settle on their schedules, arrange for housing, and pay all fees.

   WITHDRAWAL

Students who choose to withdraw from the May Term must receive approval from the Director of May Term. To withdraw, a student must complete the proper forms and submit them to the Registrar. Withdrawal from a course or from the May Term does not guarantee a refund of fees paid.

A student who withdraws from a course on or before Tuesday, May 27, will receive no grade in that course. A student who withdraws from a course after May 27, but before the last five days of class, will receive the grade of "W." A student who withdraws from a course during the last five days of class will receive a grade of "F" in that course. This applies to all the courses taken by a student who withdraws from the May Term.

   REFUND POLICY

Students who withdraw from on-campus May Term courses and residence halls, upon receiving appropriate approval, will forfeit May Term charges as follows:

• From the first day through the fifth day of classes, 75% of tuition charges will be refunded.

• From the sixth day through the tenth day of classes, 50% of tuition charges will be refunded.

• After the tenth day of classes, no refund of tuition charges will be made.

Following registration, there is no refund of room and telecommunications charges or the activity fee. However, pro-rata refunds of board charges will be made. There is no refund of any charges for students who are suspended or expelled for disciplinary reasons. The Director of May Term may consider exceptions to these policies and grant pro-rata refunds under extenuating circumstances, e.g., death, medical reasons, military obligations.

Refund policies for off-campus May Term programs can be found in the application packets for those programs.

   CLASS AVAILABILITY

The College will attempt to offer all the courses listed. Insufficient enrollment, however, or other factors beyond the College’s control may dictate schedule changes.

   CLASS HOURS

Courses will be taught on the following schedule Monday through Friday during May Term:

"A" period 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
"B" period 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Room assignments will be made at registration. The College reserves the right to change room assignments and to require residents to move to different accommodations if the College deems it expedient. Residents must furnish their own blankets, linens, towels and soap. Housing Application Form

   BOARD

All May Term students in residence anywhere on campus must participate in the board plan.  The plan includes Monday dinner through Friday lunch during the week of May 19 and Sunday dinner through Friday lunch for the remaining weeks of May Term.

   AUTOMOBILES

All motor vehicles must be registered with the Campus Security Office ($15 charge for anyone whose car was not registered with H-SC during the 2007-2008 year). Cars already registered during 2007-2008 will keep the same stickers. The usual fine of $30 will be assessed for students who fail to register their cars.

The zone parking plan will not be used during May Term; however, all other parking regulations will be in effect (see Motor Vehicle Regulations section of The Key).

   COUNSELING AND CAREER SERVICES
The Center for Counseling and Career Services provides students with a wide range of counseling and other services. The Center will make referrals to other offices on and off campus when necessary.

   COLLEGE BOOKSTORE

The College Bookstore will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the May Term 2008.

   RELAXATION AND RECREATION

The atmosphere at Hampden-Sydney during May term is quiet and relaxed. However, students may also find exciting recreational opportunities on campus, most of which are free.  The Tiger Inn, Hampden-Sydney's student union, will be open nightly.  This facility is equipped with ping-pong tables, pool tables, and dart boards, as well as a large screen television.  Athletic facilities on campus include a fitness center and weight-lifting room, swimming pool, handball and racquetball courts, basketball courts, softball fields, and tennis courts.  Planned activities for May Term 2008 include movie nights, events at the Tiger Inn, community softball games, and more.  In addition, during the last two weeks of May, students have the opportunity to enjoy outstanding chamber music as the College hosts the annual Hampden-Sydney Music Festival.

   NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Hampden-Sydney College, while exempted from Subpart C of the Title IX regulation with respect to its admissions and recruitment activities, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation, or veteran status in the operation of its education programs and with respect to employment. For information on this non-discrimination policy, contact Barbara Armentrout, Office of Human Resources, Box 127, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, VA 23943 (434) 223-6220.
