Averroes (c. 1126-98) was an Islamic Andalusian (Spanish in the present day) philosopher considered by many to be the greatest medieval commentator on Aristotle.  His most famous work, The Incoherence of the Incoherence, argues that theologians are less suited than philosophers to reach the highest demonstrative knowledge and hence are unfit to interpret divine law properly.
