Phil 305: Contemporary Philosophy (fall 2007)
Contemporary Issues in Applied Ethics:
In this course, we will study some major ethical theories before
applying these to practical moral issues in such areas as public
policy, medicine, business, and environmentalism. Topics may include
capital punishment, abortion, stem-cell research, end of life
decision-making, corporate downsizing, affirmative action, and our
duties to protect the environment.
The focus of the course will be on making principled and reasoned
responses to what are often emotionally-laden debates. This will
involve thinking critically about ethical theories and one’s moral
views in general. Students should be prepared to challenge their
moral beliefs, honestly consider opposing points of view,
participate actively in class discussion, and write at least one
well-developed argumentative paper.
