Western Culture integrates the various disciplines and unites Hampden-Sydney as
a whole to explore the human condition and human civilization. The program
consists of a three-semester series of courses taught by professors across
departments, supplying them with a shared context for intellectual inquiry. Each
semester of the program studies common readings, events, developments, and
artistic masterpieces, which form a base from which students can reach out to
specialize and to which they can refer as they continue through their years at
Hampden-Sydney. These materials often become the subjects of college-wide
colloquia making students and professors companions in their search for
understanding.
