"Before the Hill" programs are open to freshmen who wish to have a unique learning experience, while forging the bonds of brotherhood with fellow students and alumni. Programs are available for any enrolled student in the Class of 2023.

Brotherhood Before the Hill | June 21-23, 2019

Join your future Hampden-Sydney brothers on outdoor excursions that will develop your leadership skills and familiarize you with the Central Virginia area. Excursions include paintball, ropes course, hiking, kayaking and other activities that will bring you closer to your fellow Hampden-Sydney brothers. Overnight accommodations will be provided at Hampden-Sydney College. Enrollment is limited to 14 students.

Fishing Before the Hill | June 21-23, 2019

Join Andrew Marshall '17 on this three-day fly fishing adventure on Virginia's scenic rivers and lakes! 

Incoming freshmen will participate in fly-tying and casting clinics and put their skills to the test on the water. Central Virginia trout and Southside bass await!

**No previous fishing experience required!** 

Overnight accommodations will be provided at Hampden-Sydney College. Enrollment is limited to 7 students.

Freshman Professional Development Program | August 22-23

The Professional Development Program is open to freshmen who wish to develop competencies beyond the classroom and student-life experiences. The program will be held during the two days before Matriculation (August 22 & 23) and consist of a series of workshops. Programs are available to any enrolled student in the Class of 2023.
Enrollment will be capped at 35 students.

Career Readiness Competencies
Students will join a select group of fellow freshmen in sessions which will provide them with opportunities, support, and motivation to make their career goals a reality. This program will provide participants with the tools and confidence to search and apply for internships, with the goal of landing a summer internship. Sessions include:

  • Creating Career Goals
  • Professionalism and Work Ethic
  • Connecting Your Liberal Arts Education to a Career Path
  • Developing a College Level Resume and Cover Letter
  • Using Handshake and LinkedIn for Networking
  • Timelines for Internship Success
  • Leadership on Campus and in Life

Cost: $350 non-refundable fee
