SUMMER PROGRAMS

"Before the Hill" programs are open to freshmen who wish to have a unique learning experience, while forging the bonds of brotherhood with fellow students and alumni. Programs are available for any enrolled student in the Class of 2021.

Brotherhood Before the Hill | June 9-11, 2017

Join your future Hampden-Sydney brothers on outdoor excursions that will develop your leadership skills and familiarize you with the Central Virginia area. Excursions include paintball, ropes course, hiking, kayaking and other activities that will bring you closer to your fellow Hampden-Sydney men. Overnight accommodations will be provided at Hampden-Sydney College. Enrollment is limited to 7 students.

Total cost: $350
Deposit with registration is a non-refundable fee of $175. The registration and deposit are due by May 15, 2017.
Final payment of $175 is due by June 1, 2017.

Brotherhood #2 Before the Hill | July 14-16, 2017

Fishing Before the Hill | July 14-16, 2017

Led by alumnus Spotswood Payne '12, a guide with Albemarle Angler Fly Fishing, participants will hone their casting skills in the irresistible rivers and streams of Virginia.  Overnight accommodations will be provided at Hampden-Sydney College. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.

Total cost: $350
Deposit with registration is a non-refundable fee of $175. The registration and deposit are due by June 15, 2017.
Final payment of $175 is due by July 1, 2017.

Register for Fishing Before the Hill


CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Two certificate programs are open to freshmen who wish to develop competencies beyond the classroom and student-life experiences. Each program will be held during the two days before Matriculation (August 16-17) and consist of a series of workshops. During each semester, four additional workshops will be held (eight for the year), leading to a Certificate of Competency. Programs are available to any enrolled student in the Class of 2021.
Enrollment will be capped at 35 students for each program.

Freshman Professional Development Program

Career Readiness Competencies
Students will join a select group of fellow freshmen in sessions which will provide them with opportunities, support, and motivation to make their career goals a reality. This program will provide participants with the tools and confidence to search and apply for internships, with the goal of landing a summer internship. Sessions include:

  • Professional Goals Focus
  • Professionalism and Work Ethic
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Oral and Written Communication
  • Information Technology Application
  • Leadership
  • Career Management

Total cost: $300

Martin Leadership Program

Effective and Ethical Decisions
The mission of The Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest is “to develop men of character for lives of consequence.” In this program freshmen will have the opportunity to study leadership and develop and expand their leadership skills. Leaders from a variety of backgrounds in business, non-profit, government, public service, academic, and the military address these issues:
