A member of the Hampden-Sydney class of 1791, William Henry Harrison dedicated his career to the service of his country. After leaving Hampden-Sydney, Harrison served as territorial congressional delegate from the Northwest Territory, governor of the Indiana Territory, a general in the War of 1812, a U.S. Representative and Senator from Ohio, a diplomatic envoy to the nation of Colombia, and the 9th President of the United States. The Harrison Scholarships were established to honor enrolled students who have excelled in the classroom during their time at Hampden-Sydney and have also made a positive impact in the campus community.
At the end of each spring semester, the Honors Council will review the academic performance of all rising sophomores. Those rising sophomores who are not already Honors Scholars but who have outstanding academic records will be invited to apply for a Harrison Scholarship during the fall of their sophomore year (or, in the case of transfer students, in the fall following their initial matriculation at the College.) The applications will be carefully reviewed during the early part of the spring semester and the recipients of the Harrison Scholarships will be announced by the Dean of the Faculty.
Harrison Scholars will receive a grant of $5,000 in addition to any academic award per year for two years.
Additional funding beyond these awards is possible through our regular financial aid programs, based on a student's financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Grant awards, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid.
