Jeff Bridges took home the Oscar for the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work in Crazy Heart and Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett won an Oscar for the Best Original Song, "The Weary Kind", in the movie written and directed by Hampden-Sydney Alumnus Scott Cooper ’92. The Iraqi Elections James F. Pontuso The Iraqi election campaign is going on now. Campaigning consists of long lines of overcrowded cars, trucks, and vans riding up and down the main street, right near my apartment, with flags waving and horns tooting. That’s about it; vote for me, I toot loudly. The campaigners seem to be particularly intent on gaining “the American vote,” at least they get very excited when I wave at them. They take video of the campaign-parades and show them on TV – for hours. Vote for me, I toot loudly on TV. The politics is weird, but kind of fun. Of course, that is only the surface.read more...

 | | Senior Richie Holzapfel won both of his matches in Hampden-Sydney's win over Ferrum. | Tennis Tigers Drop Ferrum (March 17, 2010) FERRUM, VA--The Hampden-Sydney tennis team returned from spring break in much the same form as they began it, putting together a total team effort to beat Ferrum College yesterday by a final score of 8-1. The Tigers won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches in the convincing win. This was the first match of four on consecutive days for Hampden-Sydney. In doubles play, juniors Tal Covington and Zack Pack played their best doubles match of the young season with controlled but aggressive play to win 8-2. Senior Richie Holzapfel paired up with sophomore Ian Sammler and played well in their first match as a team. The duo took charge early and served and volleyed well throughout the match to take it 8-1. In the third doubles matchup, sophomore Barrett Polan and freshman Franklin Bowers both saw their first action of the season and gutted out a 9-8 (10-8) victory. read more...
