After finishing an internship at Hanbury Evans in Norfolk in 1998, he started in private practice specializing in design-build projects as a licensed architect and general contractor. He moved to Kauai Island in 2004 with wife Diane and two sons, Mason and Evan. He designs and develops luxury residential and commercial properties.

MATTHEW LYLE LACY III of Danville died on March 3, 2010. After growing up in South Hill and graduating from Hampden-Sydney College (where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order), he earned his MPA from Texas Christian University. Mr. Lacy spent his career in public service as city manager in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Marietta, Georgia; Alliane, Nebraska; and Front Royal, Virginia. Most recently, he had served as manager of the City of Danville since 2008. Mr. Lacy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, boating, hunting and fishing, and telling stories. He is remembered for his integrity, modesty, humility, and fairness. Mr. Lacy is the son of the late Dr. Matthew L. Lacy II ’41, the brother of John W. Lacy ’75, and the father of Matthew Lyle Lacy IV ’96.

He earned his law degree in 1969 from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and practiced law in Christiansburg until being appointed a general district judge in 1988. In 1994, he was appointed to the circuit court where he has served two terms.

JOHN TUCKER "DANDY" DOYNE, JR., of Lexana died on February 9, 2010. He was a former owner of Doyne-Burger Funeral Home, which was originally established as Doyne Funeral Home in 1838 by his great-grandfather. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He was a charter member and former president of the Farmville Rotary Club, a member of the Prince Edward Historical Society, and the Farmville United Methodist Church. Mr. Doyne and his wife Ruth were known for their beautiful rose gardens. Together they established the Southside Rose Society.
