CHRISTIAN ANDERS KIESAU of Stafford died on August 12, 2009. At Hampden-Sydney, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Mr. Kiesau was a quality control manager with L-3 Communications MRPI RFI/PEO Soldier. He was a former employee of Dillon (South Carolina) Yarn Corporation and Milliken and Company in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was active in many churches and sang in the choir at Main Street United Methodist Church in Dillon. He coached many children's sport and volunteered with the Boy Scouts, the March of Dimes, athletics boosters, Industrial Golf League, and the MacArthur Aveune Players at the Dillon County Theatre. Mr. Kiesau was an avid hunter and fisherman.

DAVID A. MUGFORD of Manakin-Sabot died on August 19, 2009. Mr. Mugford was a partner with his brothers and father at Royal Automotive for 20 years and founder of the Studee Razor. He was a member of Hermitage Country Club, where he loved the pool. He is fondly remembered for his humor, one-liners, and kindness.

Since 1982, he had been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual concentrating on special needs planning. He served on the board of the Autism Society of Central Virginia, the board of the Richmond Forum, and was a devoted supporter of Hillel. He was a lifetime member of Temple Beth-El.

The Rev. Dr. S. MARC SHERROD died on September 8, 2009. After graduating magna cum laude from Hampden-Sydney, he worked as a VISTA volunteer in Kansas City. He earned an MDiv from Columbia Theological Seminary and was ordained into the Presbyterian Church USA in 1984. He later earned a master's degree in Appalachian Studies from Appalachian State University and a doctorate of theology from Harvard University. He served churches in North Carolina, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Tennessee. He will be remembered for his generous heart, scholarly mind, enlightening sermons, faithful witness, thoughtfulness, humor and passion for justice and peace. He is the brother of David Sherrod ’81 and Marty Sherrod ’76.

HARRY GUSTAV FISH III of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, died on May 2, 2010. He worked for Home Savings/Pioneer Bank from 1972-1991, after which he became a financial advisor with Wheat First Securities. Since the late 1990s, Mr. Fish owned and operated Harry Fish Photography as a wedding and freelance photographer. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman and had a special talent for detail in duck carving and taxidermy.

KENNETH MICHAEL KINES of Charlottesville died on May 17, 2010. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he earned a master's degree in history at the University of Richmond. He worked as a mananger for the Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Rehabilitative Services before pursuing an MBA at the University of Virginia. Later, he enjoyed a successful career in banking in Charlotte, Tampa, and Baltimore. He finished his career at the University of Virginia where he served as the director of administration for the Department of Otolaryngology. Mr. Kines was a member of First Baptist Church and active with many swimming organizations. He also enjoyed hiking and wilderness backpacking and was a gifted musician, singer, and opera enthusiast.

MATTHEW LYLE LACY III of Danville died on March 3, 2010. After growing up in South Hill and graduating from Hampden-Sydney College (where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order), he earned his MPA from Texas Christian University. Mr. Lacy spent his career in public service as city manager in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Marietta, Georgia; Alliane, Nebraska; and Front Royal, Virginia. Most recently, he had served as manager of the City of Danville since 2008. Mr. Lacy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, boating, hunting and fishing, and telling stories. He is remembered for his integrity, modesty, humility, and fairness. Mr. Lacy is the son of the late Dr. Matthew L. Lacy II ’41, the brother of John W. Lacy ’75, and the father of Matthew Lyle Lacy IV ’96.

John N. McDaniel Murfreesboro TN
Dr. JOHN N. MCDANIEL of Murfreesboro died on May 3, 2010. He was the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Middle Tennessee State University. He joined MTSU's English department in 1970, served as chairman of the department in 1978, and was named dean in 1984. He earned his master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1964 and his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1972. Dr. McDaniel served as the associate editor  and advisory board member to The Upstart Crow, a scholarly journal of Shakespeare studies, and as a consulting editor for Philip Roth Studies in 2009. In 2008, he received the Bob Womack Distinguished Faculty Award at MTSU and previously recieved the University's Distinguished International Service Award. In 1981, he was awared a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to complete The History of Folklore in Europe. He is the brother of Dr. Thomas R. McDaniel ’63.

He was a cheerleader, business manager of the yearbook, and editor of the Hampden-Sydney Magazine. Mr. Pembroke earned an MBA from the University of Virginia and became a self-employed real estate broker. He was a lover of the arts and was an avid boatman.

Dr. HARRY F. "MICKEY" HOKE, JR., of Vero Beach, Florida, died on October 31, 2009. He earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and served as a captain and flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Hoke served the Richmond community for more than 30 years, most of those years at Retreat Hospital. He was an avid tennis player and golfer. At age 45 he began running marathons, including the Boston Marathon. He is remembered for his loyalty, wisdom, trustworthiness, and good humor.

Dr. Liebert was a member of the American Osteopathic Medical Association and past president of the Virginia Osteopathic Association. He was a former member of the Richmond Rotary Club, member of the Richmond Dove Association, and the James River Retriever Club. He had extensive experience in handling dogs in Retriever field events and had a great passion for hunting and fishing.

JAMES GORDON RENNIE, JR., of Richmond died on March 12, 2010. He earned a master's degree from the University of Richmond and a doctor of education from the College of William and Mary. Mr. Rennie was a veteran of the U.S. Army before moving to Richmond in 1956 to begin a career in banking at First and Merchants National Bank. He passed the Uniform CPA examination in 1959, earning the gold medal for the highest score in Virginia. He was a longtime member of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and serving as a deacon and an elder. After moving to Hayes, he and his wife joined Yorkminster Presbyterian Church.

After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he returned to his home in Williamsburg where he joined Brooks Agency, Inc., the family insurance and real estate business founded by his grandfather in 1885. He was past president of the Greater Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Williamsburg Kiwanis Club, and Williamsburg Area Association of Realtors. He served on the boards of Bacon Street, Williamsburg Reunion Committee, Williamsburg Historic Records Association, Heritage Humane Society, Colonial Virginia Council for the Boy Scouts of America, Williamsburg-James City Merger Study Commission, Williamsburg Recreations Commission, Williamsburg Architectural Review Board, Golden Horseshoe Club, Bruton Parish Outreach Committee, and as a longtime member of the Peninsula Bank & Trust Co. Advisory Board. Mr. Brooks was secretary of the Williamsburg Board of Elections for 20 years and was a founding member of the Williamsburg Youth League. He is the father of G. Tyler Brooks III ’74.

FRANK FITZHUGH CHURCHILL of King George County died on June 17, 2010. He served as a lieutenant in the Army Chemical Corps during the Korean Conflict, then returned to King George to work at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory. He retired as a division head of the Weapons Evaluation Division following 37 years of servic. Mr. Churchill was very involved in his community, including serving as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 172, chairman of the King George County Wetlands Board, member of Smooth Memorial Library Board of Trustees, member of the Board of Equaliation, and member of the School Board. He also served as director for the Bank of Westmoreland and as a director of the advisory board of First Virginia Bank. Mr. Churchill was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

After the service he joined his father's real estate and insurance brokerage business. He operated LeRoy Haile Jr. Real Estate Company for the next 54 years until retiring. Mr. Haile was a member of the Baltimore County Appraisers' Soceity and the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors. He was a past president and board member of the Towson Business Association, had chaired the Towson Fourth of July Parade, and was a former president of the Baltimore County Historical Society. He was a longtime member and former president of the Towson Kiwanis Club.

After graduating from Union Theological Seminary and serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Hughes and his wife Anne served as missionaries in Brazil, Mexico, and Nicaragua. He also served as a term as Latin America Secretary for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was chaplain at Arkansas (now Lyon) College. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. In his retirement, Mr. Hughes continued to work for peace locally and nationally.

WILLIAM ALLEN HUNTER, SR., of Appomattox died on August 31, 2009. He served in World War II as a member of the 15th Air Force flying 50 combat missions as a nose gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber. Mr. Hunter was president and CEO of The Farmers Bank of Appomattox from 1979 until his retirement in 1986. He was an active member of Concord Presbyterian Church. He is the father of William A. Hunter, Jr. ’75 and the grandfather of Walter Dunn Hunter ’12.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia and served his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Dr. McLean practiced dermatology in Beckley for 44 years before retiring in 2006. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Black Knight Country Club. In 2005, Dr. McLean was named West Virginia's Outstanding Older Worker.

He worked for many years in the insurance industry in Richmond. He later retired as an account executive at A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc.

HENRY ROBERTS MILLER III of Richmond died on February 2, 2010. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a treasurer of First Federal Savings and Loan and national sales representative at Westvaco. Mr. Miller served as president of the Richmond Jaycees from 1962 to 1963 and sat on the Richmond City Council from 1964 to 1965. He was an avid hunter and dog trainer, including owning and training "Buck," Virginia's first AKC Amateur Field Champion. He was a member of the Society of Cincinnati and volunteered at Henrico Doctor's Hospital. He is the father of Henry R. Miller IV ’75

Dr. MAXWELL V. PERROW of Winfield, West Virginia, died on July 9, 2009. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, he earned a bachelor's of divinity at Louisville Seminary. He served churches in West Virginia and Florida before moving to Los Angeles where he also served churches while earning his Ph.D. in communication from UCLA. He worked at Cathedral Films and the Franciscan Communications Center. He later moved to Alaska where he workd as director of communication/development at Sheldon Jackson College and then as a chaplain on a cruise line. Back in the continental U.S., Dr. Perrow served three churches in West Virginia before moving to Italy and working as a cook in a monastery for a year. He returned to West Virginia to serve one last church before retiring.

Dr. ROBERT W. TIRRELL, JR., of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont, died on December 29, 2009. He attended several different schools in New England, New Jersey, Germany, and Virginia before graduating from Dartmouth. He graduated from the New York University School of Dentistry in 1951. During World War II he was a Navy Pharmacist mate attached to the 3rd Marines, 3rd Regiment in the Pacific.

GEORGE BORUM LITTLE of Richmond died on July 15, 2010. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines. He then graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi. Mr. Little was recalled into military service during the Korean War, where he served in the Counterintelligence Corps. He practiced law for 57 years. He was a member of the Richmond Bar, the Virginia State Bar, and the American and the Inter-American Bar Associations. Mr. Little was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church beginning in 1939.

Dr. W. LEVI OLD, JR., of Virginia Beach died on December 7, 2009. He attended Episcopal High School in Norfolk, Hampden-Sydney College, and Northwestern University Midshipman School before serving as an Ensign, USNR in World War II. After the war, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and served his residency at MCA and the University of Virginia. During his surgical practice in Norfolk, he served a term as the chief of surgery  at Norfolk General Hospital where he started the Burn Unit. As chief of surgery at DePaul Hospital he founded the Vascular Laboratory. Drol Old was on the clinical surgery faculty of the Eastern Virginia Medical School; he authored 30 scientific articles in medical journals. He was involved in the creation of the Medical History Department at EVMS. As one of the first thoracic and vascular surgical specialists in eastern Virginia, he introduced a number of new procedures into the area of pacemakers and bedside breathing ventilators. He was involved in many medical associations and the founder and first president of the Tidewater Tennis Center. He is the grandfather of William Old Kitchin ’12. In 2006, his family established The William Levi Old, Jr. M.D. ’46 Scholarship at Hampden-Sydney.

R. CONRAD DODL, JR., of Lynchburg died on July 20, 2009. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a member of VPB 118 Squadron flying missions in the Pacific. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Dodl was a member of the Virginia Society of Professinal Engineers and retired from Wiley & Wilson, an engineering firm in Lychburg, after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Lynchburg Soceity of Professional Engineers, the Kiwanis Club of Lynchburg, and Centenary United Methodist Church. Mr. Dodl enjoyed Smith Mountain Lake, genealogy, and traveling.

Dr. JOHN ANDREW "JACK" MOORE of Greensboro, North Carolina, died on September 25, 2009. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia before serving as a doctor in the U.S. Navy. In 1954, he and his family moved to Greensboro where he co-founded Greensboro Medical Associates. Dr. Moore was a member of numerous local and national medical organizations and served as the chief of medicine at Wesley Long. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and joined the choir during his retirement from medicine. Dr. Moore was a member of the Greensboro Kiwanis Club and a big fan of minor and major league baseball. He is the brother of the late Dr. Robert P. Moore ’43 and William A. Moore ’51.

EDWIN BRADLEY KENT of Midlothian died on July 5, 2010. He was a standout football player at Hampden-Sydney College but left school to work as a shipfitter in Norfolk at the outbreak of World War II. He then joined the U.S. Army and was deployed to the Philippines. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war he worked for his family's business, Kent Brothers Lumber Company, before becoming a U.S. rural mail carrier.

JESSE R. HOPKINS of Huntsville, Alabama, died on November 10, 2009. He was a distinguished veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving as a carrier pilot in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a lieutenant commander. For his service to his country, he was awarded the Air Medal, three Gold Stars, and additional air medals. After the Navy, he enjoyed a civilian career as a contract administrator with Thiokol Chemical Corp.

The Hon. ROBERT BRUCE SPENCER, JR., of Dillwyn died on October 17, 2009. Before graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he served in the U.S. Army. He earned his law degree from Washington & Lee University Law School and started his practice in Dillwyn in 1952. Mr. Spencer was appointed a part-time judge in 1960; he became a full-time judge in Buckingham, Cumberland, and Appomattox Counties in 1979. He retired in 1995 but continued to substitute in the court system for many years. Mr. Spencer was a member of the Virginia Bar Association, the Commission of Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program, the Buckingham Volunteer Fire Department, the Dillwyn Masonic Lodge No. 315 A.F. & A.M., Brandermill Country Club, and Whitehall United Methodist Church.

Dr. CARY GRAYSON SUTER of Ivy died on August 31, 2009. He earned his medical degree in 1947 from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He interned at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birminghan and at the Cleveland Clinic, where he studied internal medicine. He returned to UVA for a three-year residency in neurology and psychiatry and then spent two years at the Mayo Clinic in a traineeship in clinic neurology and in electroencephalography. In 1959 he went to the Medical College of Virginia to head the school's neurology program. He served as chairman of the MCV neurology department from 1963 until 1985 and continued to practice medicine until about 2000.

He was past mayor for the Town of Tazewell and served for a time as judge of the Town Traffic Court. Mr. Bowen was director and chairman of the board of the Bank of Tazewell County and National Bankshares and director and chairman of the board of the Board of Tazewell Farm Bureau. He was a member of Tazewell Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, trustee, and Sunday school teacher.

JOHN G. SANDERS of Clifton Forge died on January 14, 2010. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked at Mountain National Bank, where he reitred as president. Mr. Sanders was a member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He served on the Clifton Forge School Board, was chairman of the Clifton Forge Electoral Board, and vice-president of the Clifton Forge Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Sanders was a member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge #166 A.F & A.M., Alleghany Royal Arch #24, Alleghany Commandery No. 23, Scottish Rite Bodies of the Roanoke Valley, having the honor of being a 32 degree K.C.C.H. He was a member of the Hot Springs Shrine Club and the last living charter member of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He was elected the 63rd potentate of Kazim Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S.. He was a past director of Roanoke Court #59 Royal Order of Jesters.

William Hamilton Flannagan Sr. Roanoke VA
WILLIAM HAMILTON "HAM" FLANNAGAN, SR., of Roanoke died on May 4, 2010. He was chief administrator at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for 32 years before retiring in 1986. At Hampden-Sydney he was a member of the football team and a member of Kappa Alpha. When he took over the hospital, it was deeply in debt. Under his leadership it regained profitability and expanded. During the 1970s and ’80s, Roanoke Memorial acquired eight community hospitals in Southwest Virginia, three medical office buidlings, an athletic club, and a helicopter rescue service. Mr. Flannagan was a donor to the Crockett-Flannagan-Weaver Scholarship at Hampden-Sydney. He is the father of William H. Flannagan, Jr. ’71 and J. Michael Flannagan ’76.

WILLIAM A. LASHLEY of Williamsburg died on May 9, 2010. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney magna cum laude and served as president of the student body, managing editor of The Tiger, an officer of Kappa Alpha Order, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Delta Chi. After graduation, he joined the faculty as an English instructor. He enlisted in the Navy while pursuing his M.A. at the University of Virginia in 1941. After the war he worked as a newspaper reporter and later entered public relations. He worked in public relations for the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, Ford Motor Company, and Reynolds Metals Company before joining Norfolk and Western Railroad as director of public relations and advertising. He stayed with the company through mergers with New York Central and the development of Conrail. He retired in 1977. In the mid-1960s he donated to Hampden-Sydney the Penn Station Eagle that sits in Yank's Corner between the football and baseball fields. He is the father of Claiborne B. Lashley ’78.

Dr. J. GARNETT BRUCE, JR., of Orange died on July 3, 2010. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School. During World War II, he was a physician with TVA during the construction of Fontana Dam. He worked as a physician in the Orange County community for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1979. Dr. Bruce was instrumental in building the Orange-Gordonsville Community Hospital during the 1950s. He also worked to re-open the Gordonsville Presbyterian Church. He is remembered for his great sense of humor, love of golf, and free recitation of poems. He is the father of Dr. James G. Bruce III ’66.

The Rev. DAY CARPER died on October 7, 2009, in Asheville, NC. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College he was assistant principal and teacher in a junior high school in Axton. He then attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. During his seminary years he served as teacher and superintendent of a large Sunday School in an African-American community and later was pastor of their church. In 1940, he was appointed by the Board of World Missions of the Presbyterian Church U.S. as an Evangelistic Missionary to the (former) Belgian Congo. Before assuming his duties in Africa, he was supply pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Suffolk. After furlough, in July of 1960, he served briefly as associate minister at First Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, FL, while waiting for a visa to return to the chaotic Congo after their independence from Belgium. In October of that year, he was allowed to return to Congo without his family and remained for 14 months. During his years as a missionary he was asked by the African church to assist another missionary in the compiling of a Bible Concordance in Tshiluba – a Bantu language of that area. The finished work was published by the British Bible Society. After 32 years with the Board of World Missions, he and his family returned to the United States permanently and he took a year of post graduate work at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Prior to his retirement, he served five and a half years as Associate Minister at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, North Carolina. During his retirement, he and his wife spent two, three-month periods as Volunteers in Mission at the Presbyterian/Episcopal Mission Hospital in Leogane, Haiti. His retirement also provided him with time to enjoy woodturning, croquet, tennis, and many other activities including the North Carolina Senior Games, as well as community volunteerism.

JOHN TUCKER "DANDY" DOYNE, JR., of Lexana died on February 9, 2010. He was a former owner of Doyne-Burger Funeral Home, which was originally established as Doyne Funeral Home in 1838 by his great-grandfather. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He was a charter member and former president of the Farmville Rotary Club, a member of the Prince Edward Historical Society, and the Farmville United Methodist Church. Mr. Doyne and his wife Ruth were known for their beautiful rose gardens. Together they established the Southside Rose Society.

ROBERT M. RICHARDSON of Bluefield, West Virginia, died on October 19, 2009. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he earned an LL.B. in 1941 from the University of Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and the West Virginia State Bar Associaiton. Mr. Richardson enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on an oil tanker in the South Pacific until December 1945 when he was honorably discharged as a lieutenant commander. He returned to Bluefield and returned to law with the firm of Richardson & Kemper, where he remained until his retirement. During that time he served as assistant prosecuting attorney of Mercer County, member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, and as president of the West Virginia Bar Association. Mr. Richardson was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bluefield and the local Rotary club. Also, he was a member of the board of directors of Bluefield Supply Company, Sovereign Coal Group, Bluefield Rescue Squad, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Hampden-Sydney College. He is the son of George Richardson, Jr. ’10, the brother of George Richardson III ’36, the brother-in-law of Bill Hoffman ’49, and the father of Joseph C. Richardson ’79.
