Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 6, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College (8-3/1-1 ODAC) junior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) pitched a complete game six hitter en route to leading the Tigers to a 14-2 seven-inning victory over Virginia Wesleyan College (5-4/1-1 ODAC) in the first game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.  Virginia Wesleyan turned the tables in the second game with an 11-1 nine-inning victory over the Tigers.

Schoenholtz took a no hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering a hit to the Marlins.  The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks in part to a five-run first and a seven-run fifth in what amounted to H-SC’s most-lopsided victory of the season.

Tiger freshman designated hitter David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, while freshman catcher Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

The Marlins spoiled the no hit bid in the sixth as Daniel Andrews singled up the middle.  Andrews also broke up the shutout as he later scored on an RBI grounder by Colin Roberson.  Virginia Wesleyan pushed across another run in the seventh on a Brandon Hill double, but it was not enough to overcome Schoenholtz and the Tigers.  Schoenholtz improved to 2-0 on the year as he went all seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out six and walking none.  Virginia Wesleyan starter Jason Jarrett took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits through two and one-third innings of work.

In the second game, Virginia Wesleyan used a six-run fourth inning to build a 7-0 lead and cruised to an 11-1 victory over Hampden-Sydney.  Marlin starter David Imperato held the Tigers at bay through seven innings as he gave up six hits and one run, while walking five and striking out five.

Marlin designated hitter Cody Stinger led the team at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a two-run homer in the fourth inning.  Meanwhile, catcher Bryan Brinkley and outfielder Daniel Andrews each drove in two runs to help with the Virginia Wesleyan assault.

Tiger leadoff batter Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) led the H-SC bats with two of the team’s six hits, while Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) had the only RBI.

Hampden-Sydney starter Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits over three innings of work.

Hampden-Sydney, which is in the midst of an eight day stretch in which it plays nine games, returns to action Monday as the team travels to Newberry, SC, to take on Newberry College at 1 pm.
