TIGERS OPEN SEASON WITH HOT BATS, DROP RUTGERS-CAMDEN 9-1

RCU-HSC Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 17, 2006)— The defending ODAC and Division III South Region Champion Hampden-Sydney Tigers stormed into the new season with a 9-1 victory in a darkness falling shortened game over the visiting Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden.

Following a walk and stolen base by senior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch), the Tigers scored in the first inning on a single to right field off the bat of All-ODAC senior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Willamsburg, VA/Jamestown).  Two more runs crossed the plate in the second inning for the Tigers as  left fielder Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) singled home catcher David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee Davis) and then stole second as part of a designed double steal sending second baseman Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) across the dish.

With a 3-0 lead in hand the Tigers looked to the strong arm of their senior All-American John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) to shut the door on any possible comeback.  Schoenholtz struck out six in the shortened five inning contest, while walking one and giving up five hits.

The lone Scarlet Raptor run scored in the third inning as second basemen Tyler Inkster doubled and then was driven in by third baseman Brian Jakubowski.

The Tigers went on to score six more runs over the next two innings thanks to disciplined but aggressive base running as well as RBI’s from David Cameron (Midlothian,VA/Midlothian), Todd Harrell, Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Valley) and David Toney.

In the other games at the H-SC Spring Baseball Tournament, Villa Julie College lost a 15 inning marathon to Frostburg State University 4-3.  The afternoon contest between Washington & Lee and Waynesburg was called to a tie 9-9 thanks to the same darkness that ended the Hampden-Sydney game earlier than expected.

Tomorrow’s match-ups for the Tigers include a game against Villa Julie at 11:00 am and then an afternoon contest against Waynesburg at 3:00 pm at Yank Bernier Field.
