BASEBALL TIGERS SPLIT WITH ROANOKE, WAIT TO FIND OUT ABOUT ODAC TOURNAMENT
Game One Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 19, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team earned a split with Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at Yank Bernier Field on Saturday afternoon. Despite committing five errors, the Maroons earned a 4-3 victory in the first game as the Tigers could not erase a 4-2 deficit in the seven inning game. In game two, the Tigers scored at least two runs in each inning over the last four innings to capture a 10-3 win and earn a split with the Maroons. With the split, Hampden-Sydney moves to 17-23 on the season and 8-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Roanoke is now 15-21 overall and 8-10 in the league. In first game, Roanoke took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Tigers answered with two runs in their portion of the third, including a solo homer by senior Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk), to cut the lead to one run, 3-2. The Maroons increased their lead to two runs, 4-2, as Graham Thacker scored on a single by Patrick Collins in the top of the fifth inning. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers managed one run and had the bases loaded but could not tie the game, giving Roanoke the 4-3 win. Tiger starter Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for Hampden-Sydney. The senior worked all seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters. Barrett Henderson earned the victory for the Maroons, giving up three runs on eight hits in six and two-thirds innings of work. Drew Wallace earned the save for Roanoke. In the second game, Roanoke again scored first, tallying a single-run in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers answered with a run of their own in the bottom portion of the second to tie the game, 1-1. Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Hampden-Sydney rallied with two outs for three runs as senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) and junior Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) scored a single by freshman Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. The Tigers added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning to claim the 10-3 victory. Sophomore starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the win for the Tigers as he gave up three runs on 11 hits and two walks in six and two-thirds innings of action. Roanoke starter Drew Wallace took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and six walks in four and two-thirds innings of action. Sophomore John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) and senior Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) were solid in relief work for the Tigers, allowing no runs and only two hits in the final two and one-third innings of action. On the afternoon, Hampden-Sydney was led at the plate by a pair of seniors as Matt Venezuela (Suffolk, VA/Norfolk Collegiate) and David Toney went 3-for-4 for the Tigers. Venezuela scored two runs and had one RBI, while Toney scored three runs and had one RBI. Todd Harrell went 4-for-8 on the afternoon, scoring three runs and recording two RBI. Senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) went 1-for-6 for the Tigers, scoring one run and recording three RBI. Hampden-Sydney now waits to find out if they made the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
