LYNCHBURG TOPS HAMPDEN-SYDNEY IN ODAC OPENING ROUND LYNCHBURG, VA (April 24, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney recorded 13 hits against Lynchburg College in the opening round of the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament at City Stadium in Lynchburg, VA, but the Tigers could only manage two runs as they fell to the Hornets, 7-2. The Tigers had three more hits than the Hornets, but committed three errors compared to just one error for Lynchburg. With the win, Lynchburg improves to 29-9 on the season and will play the loser of the game between Randolph-Macon and Bridgewater on Friday at 3:00 pm. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 17-24 overall and will play the loser of the game between Washington and Lee and Virginia Wesleyan on Friday at 11:00 am. Lynchburg scored in the bottom of the first inning as Daniel Haugh scored on a double by Ronnie LaBrie to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second when Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) scored on a double by Ben Brawley (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Valley). The Hornets scored one run in the bottom of the third, two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one run in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Brawley cut into the Hornets' lead, 5-2, as he crossed the plate for the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning on a double by Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls), but Lynchburg answered in the bottom portion of the sixth to help secure the 7-2 win. Senior Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for the Tigers, working five innings, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out five Hornets. In three innings of relief work, sophomore Johnny West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) allowed only one run on three hits and no walks, while striking out one batter. Joe Devlin earned the victory for Hornets to improve to 8-0 on the season as he worked seven innings, allowing two runs on ten hits and one walk. Sophomore Ben Brawley led the Tigers at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Nick Price was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Also producing for the Tigers was senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) as he went 2-for-4 at the plate, while senior Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) went 2-for-4 with one walk. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
