FOUR-RUN EIGHTH POWERS TIGERS IN 6-5 WIN

Hampden-Sydney erases late deficit with big inning, snap four-game skid

Box Score

DANVILLE, VA (March 23, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney overcame a late 4-2 deficit with four-runs in the eighth inning and held on in the ninth to score a 6-5 victory over host Averett University.

Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Tigers, who stopped a four-game losing streak with the win and improved to 9-12 overall. The Cougars dropped to 11-16-1 and lost their third game of the season to Hampden-Sydney, which swept Averett in an opening weekend double header in February.

The Tigers built a 1-0 lead in the first when Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) singled home fellow Danville native Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington).

Averett answered right back in its half of the first and took a 2-1 advantage on Eric McGuire's run-scoring single to left field. The lead grew to 4-2 after six innings when the Cougars' Eric Sibrizzi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

But Hampden-Sydney rallied in its half of the eighth, capitalizing on three Averett errors to post four runs and take control. After Harrelson scored on a Cougar throwing error and Matt Brown (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) crossed home on another Averett miscue to tie the score at 4-4, Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) and Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) each drove in runs to hand Hampden-Sydney a 6-4 lead after eight innings.

Averett notched one run in the ninth and placed two more runners in scoring position with two outs, but Tigers' closer Matt Daniel (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) closed the book on a Hampden-Sydney triumph by forcing Brian Knowles to ground out to short to end the game.

Harrelson finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Hampden-Sydney reliever Will Wiseman (Danville, VA/George Washington) picked up the win in relief. Daniel earned his third save on the year with his two-innings of work.

Hampden-Sydney will be back in action Thursday, March 26 when it welcomes Ferrum College to Yank Bernier Field for a 3:30 pm contest.
