RALLYING GENERALS TOP TIGERS IN EXTRA INNINGS

10th inning sacrifice fly downs Tigers; Hampden-Sydney's Evan Rogers homers

Box Score

LEXINGTON, VA (March 5, 2009)—Anthony Cardona's sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning carried Washington and Lee University to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over visiting Hampden-Sydney on Thursday afternoon at Captain Dick Smith Field.

Cardona's extra inning heroics capped a Generals' rally from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth and helped Washington and Lee improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Tigers dropped to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the league, but nearly collected a big road victory behind tremendous starting pitching and timely hitting.

Hampden-Sydney starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) pitched six complete innings, striking out three and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. Bailey was lifted in the seventh with a two run lead in favor of reliever Will Wiseman (Danville, VA/George Washington), who preserved the lead with a perfect seventh inning of work.

The Tigers were unable to add insurance to their lead in their half of the eighth and Washington and Lee capitalized. The Generals managed three runs in the frame, eventually taking a 4-3 lead on a Byron Peyster two-out, RBI single.

Hampden-Sydney's Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) kept the Tigers' hopes alive in the top of the ninth with a two-out single to center, and after recording his eighth stolen base of the season, scored on an A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) RBI double to even the score at 4-4.

The Tigers' second reliever of the afternoon, John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) successfully worked out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth with two key ground balls, the first to third base earning a force out at home and the second a grounder to the mound enabling the 1-2-3 inning-ending double play.

But Washington and Lee held Hampden-Sydney at bay in the next half inning and managed to get its leadoff man on base in the bottom of the tenth. After an intentional walk and wild pitch, Cardona lifted the game winning fly ball to right field, scoring leadoff batter Hunter Serenbetz to end the contest.

Hampden-Sydney backstop Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) led the Tigers' offensive charge with a 2-for-5, 2 RBI effort at the dish. Prill, left fielder Erik Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and right fielder Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) also tallied two hits in the loss.

Senior first baseman Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) staked Hampden-Sydney to a 1-0 lead with a solo blast to lead off the second inning.

Hampden-Sydney will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 8 when it hosts arch-rival Randolph-Macon for a double-header beginning at 1:00 pm.
