Christopher Newport earns 12th win with offensive explosion

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 19, 2009)—Christopher Newport University pounded out 17 hits and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning on its way to a 14-8 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Thursday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.

Captains' third baseman Parker Neal drove in a game-high five runs to lead Christopher Newport, which improved to 12-3-1 on the season.

Hampden-Sydney (8-10) was paced by Matt Brown (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird), Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) and Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) who each tallied two RBI. The leading trio, however, managed to go just 3-for-12 at the plate.

Neal and the Captains got their bats rolling early. Neal's two-run double sparked a five-run first, chasing Tigers' starter Kevin Sidney (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) after just one inning.

CNU absorbed one Hampden-Sydney tally in the third before snatching an 9-1 lead with three more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, again powered by a Neal two-run base hit.

The Tigers nearly posed a serious threat to the Captains' lead in their half of the seventh. A Brown RBI and Price RBI single drew Hampden-Sydney within 9-4 with two-out and two on in the frame.

Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) and Price advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch, but Christopher Newport starter Brandon Berry worked his way out of the jam, forcing Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) to pop out to the shortstop for the third out of the inning.

The Captains proceeded to post a five-spot in the eighth to snag a commanding 14-4 lead and coasted to the win.

Berry earned the win after pitching six complete innings and allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out eight Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action Saturday, March 21 when it travels to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Guilford College in an ODAC double-header beginning at 12:00 pm.
