HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 28, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney junior third baseman Matt Brown (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) went 4-for-7 with four RBI on the day, sophomore shortstop Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) tallied run-scoring triples in each contest and junior pitcher Ryan Daniel (Yanceyville, NC/Bartlett-Yancey) tossed a complete game shutout in game two as the Tigers swept a twin bill from visiting Emory and Henry College, 9-5 and 8-0 at Yank Bernier Field.

Hampden-Sydney improved to 11-12 overall and 5-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, setting the stage for its showdown with Virginia Wesleyan College tomorrow afternoon in a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.

In game one, the Tigers trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third, but opened things up with three runs in the frame. Zach Harrelson's (Danville, VA/George Washington) RBI triple tied the score at 2-2 before senior Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) cleared the bases with a two-run double, putting Hampden-Sydney ahead to stay.

Starter John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) turned in a strong performance for the win, lasting six innings and allowing just three earned runs, two earned, on five hits while fanning eight. West received some welcomed insurance in the fourth and fifth innings, as the Tigers extended their lead to 9-2 behind a Brown two-run double, Martin's RBI two-bagger and A.J. Prill's (Midlothian, VA/James River) run-scoring single.

Marc Ailstock tried to ignite an Emory and Henry rally with a solo shot off West in the sixth, but Tyler Napier (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) closed out the Wasps (5-15, 3-7 ODAC) in the seventh to secure the victory.

Daniel was the story in game two, logging the first nine inning complete game for the Tigers' pitching staff this season. The Yanceyville, North Carolina native was masterful in improving his record to 3-1, striking out seven Wasps, walking none and scattering five hits over nine innings.

Hampden-Sydney's offense started slow, but turned a 3-0 duel into an 8-0 rout with a five-run eighth. After Rogers singled home Brown for a 4-0 advantage, Martin struck the clinching blow three batters later with the bases loaded, lacing a bases clearing triple to the right field wall.

Nick Price (Sterling, VA/West Potomac) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Martin and Daniel cruised through four batters in the ninth.

Martin finished the afternoon with five RBI in two games. Rogers drove in four runs for Kinne's club, which has won three in a row.
