H-SC DROPS 9-3 DECISION TO FERRUM

Tiger road, batting woes continue as Panthers hand H-SC third straight defeat

Box Score

FERRUM, VA (March 12, 2009)—Ferrum College starting pitcher Brian Mays held Hampden-Sydney's lineup scoreless for seven innings and the Panthers turned away a late Tiger push with a four-run eighth inning en route to a 9-3 victory Thursday afternoon at Panther Field.

Mays fanned eight and surrendered just two earned runs on three hits before being lifted in the eighth with two out and two men on. Hampden-Sydney trailed 5-0 at that juncture, but showed signs of life against Panthers' reliever Nick Entsminger.

Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) reached on an error by the third baseman which scored Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) and advanced A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) to second. Tigers' third baseman Matt Brown (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) followed with a bases clearing double creeping the Tigers back within striking distance at 5-3.

But Ferrum halted all Hampden-Sydney momentum by answering right back in its half of the eighth, using RBI singles from Travis Crump and Michael Nolte and a two-run double from Kevin Marshall to extend its lead to the final 9-3 margin.

Brown notched one of Hampden-Sydney's four hits, going 1-for-4 from the plate and tallying two RBI. Freshman Kevin Sidney (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) took the loss after allowing three runs of five hits in three innings.

Marshall turned in an excellent performance for the Panthers, going 4-for-5 with a game-high four RBI. Six different Panthers drove in a run.

The loss drops Hampden-Sydney to 7-8 on the young season while Ferrum improves to 9-5. The Tigers, who are 0-5 on the road this season, will have a chance to earn their first victories away from Yank Bernier Field when they travel to ODAC foe Bridgewater College this Sunday, March 15 for a double-header beginning at 12:00 pm.
