LATE SURGE PROPELS LYNCHBURG PAST TIGERS, 10-6

Hornets produce six total runs in the seventh and eighth to top Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 2, 2009)—Lynchburg College used an effective pitching performance from starter Jonathan Nichols and manufactured six runs in the late innings en route to a 10-6 victory over Hampden-Sydney on a cold and misty Thursday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.

The ODAC leading Hornets (18-9, 8-1 ODAC) turned a 4-4 deadlock into a 6-4 edge with two runs in the seventh before adding four more tallies in the eighth to snatch an insurmountable 10-4 advantage and chase Tigers' starter John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette), who lasted 7.2 innings and dropped to 3-4 on the season.

The Tigers tried to conjure up some two-out magic in the bottom of the ninth, as Matt Brown (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) reached on a base hit to center and then scored on an error and Erik Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) drove home Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) with an RBI single to close the gap to four.

But Hampden-Sydney's late inning push did no more than deny Nichols a complete game, as Hornets' reliever Keith Yancey fanned Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) for the final out of the contest.

Hampden-Sydney (12-14, 6-6 ODAC) and Lynchburg battled neck and neck for the first six innings. The Hornets scored one run in each of the first three innings while the Tigers posted two runs in the first and fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the first inning with two outs, as Brown belted an RBI double and Rogers a run-scoring single. Hampden-Sydney then capitalized on two Hornet errors in the fourth before Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) and Brown plated runs with RBI base knocks.

Lynchburg tied the game at four in the sixth on a Daniel Haugh RBI ground-out to second and from that juncture, the Hornet offense kicked into high gear while Nichols buckled down on the hill.

Brown paced Hampden-Sydney with three hits and two RBI. Rogers went 3-for-5 and drove in one run for the Tigers.

Chris Colquhoun tallied three RBI for Lynchburg, which maintained its stronghold on first place in the league with the win. Nichols lasted 8.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs while scattering 11 hits and stranding 11 Tigers on base.

Hampden-Sydney returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 4 when it welcomes Southern Virginia to Yank Bernier Field for a 12:00 pm double header.
