BROWN AND WILLIAMS NAMED BASEBALL ALL-STATE (June 23, 2009) NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Junior third baseman Matt Brown (Chester, VA/LC Bird) has just been named Virginia Sports Information Directors' First Team All-State while sophomore Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) made the Second Team as the utility player. Christopher Newport's Trae Bailey took home Player of the Year honors, while Shenandoah saw Cory Nelson earn Rookie of the Year honors and Kevin Anderson earn Coach of the Year honors. Brown, a First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region selection, was the clean up batter for much of the season batting .372 in his 38 games. He knocked in a team-high 43 RBI with 55 hits. His 19 doubles not only led the team, but also the ODAC. His clutch hitting was huge for Coach Kinne and the Tigers as his 18 2-out RBI were good for second in the ODAC. Brown also added four homeruns on the season. Williams, a Second Team All-ODAC selection, showed this season he is one of the fastest players in the game as he stole 33 bases which led the Tigers and the ODAC. He was a game changer in 2009 with a .377 batting average, two doubles, an ODAC leading nine triples, and one homerun. Williams also batted in 23 runs while scoring 41 of his own. The sophomore broke the Hampden-Sydney records for both steals and triples. The full All-State teams can be seen below:
