 | | Ben Jessee tallied career-high numbers of 14 points and five rebounds in the Tigers' 79-59 loss to Randolph-Macon. | R-MC Pulls Away Late, Stings Tigers 79-59 (January 8, 2009) ASHLAND, VA--With 2:27 remaining and Randolph-Macon enjoying a comfortable 69-53 lead over Hampden-Sydney, Yellow Jackets’ big man Billy Campion missed on the second of two free throw attempts. Two Tigers leapt high for the rebound, but the ball squirted in and out of both pairs of hands, falling gently into the grasp of a lingering Danny Jones. The R-MC forward calmly laid in the put back, completing a play that served as a microcosm of the Tigers’ evening in Ashland; close, but not quite able to get over the hump. Randolph-Macon (9-3, 4-0 ODAC) turned a competitive, back-and-forth affair into a sleeper with a 20-1 second-half run that spanned a majority of the final 7:16 en route to earning a 79-59 victory over Hampden-Sydney in front of 2,398 at Crenshaw Gymnasium. Leading by a narrow 57-52 margin with 7:16 to play in the game, the Jackets exploded for 22 points the rest of the way, holding the Tigers to just seven during that span and even keeping H-SC scoreless for a 5:52 stretch. A Colin O’Neill foul shot drew the Tigers within 60-53 at the 6:36 mark. Hampden-Sydney did not score again until Shane Payne canned a jumper with 44 seconds remaining. more...
 | | Freshman Ben Jessee scored a career-high 14 points, but the Tigers fell to EMU 70-69. | Visiting Royals Upend Hampden-Sydney, 70-69 (January 3, 2009) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--The ODAC is one of the toughest conferences in all of Division III basketball, one where any team can beat another on a given night. As if they didn't know already, Hampden-Sydney witnessed that fact first hand Saturday afternoon. Eastern Mennonite's George Johnson canned a three-pointer with 1:17 to play, capping an 18-9 closing run for the Royals and giving the visitors a 70-69 victory over Hampden-Sydney (5-6, 0-2 ODAC) at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Trailing by one with 15 seconds remaining, the Tigers were unable to get off a shot attempt, keeping the Royals (7-3, 3-0 ODAC) unbeaten in conference play on the young season. Turner King led all scorers with 21 points, but the tough EMU man-to-man defense held the ODAC's leading scorer to just five points in the second half. For the second straight game, Hampden-Sydney jumped out to comfortable lead very early, scoring eight points before the Royals reached the scoreboard. Behind King's 16 first half points, the Tigers maintained the lead for the entire first half, taking a 32-28 lead into the locker room. more...
 | | The Tigers' Shane Payne tallied his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but H-SC dropped a 78-67 decision to John Carroll in the Car Coop/Weenie Miller championship game. | John Carroll Holds Off H-SC For Car Coop Crown (December 30, 2008) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--For five minutes in the early stages of the second half, Hampden-Sydney stood toe-to-toe with and even outplayed traditional, national powerhouse John Carroll. Trailing the Blue Streaks 49-35 with 15:33 to play in the championship game of the 2008 Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament, Hampden-Sydney pulled from its own proud tradition of hardwood excellence and put John Carroll on its heels, partaking in a breathtaking 15-2 run over the next 4:51. The scoring spree enabled the Tigers to crawl back within one, 51-50, on a Turner King layup off a dish from Ben Jessee at the 10:56 mark. But John Carroll (6-4) demonstrated its grit and determination with a 6-0 answer, as all-tournament team performer Maurice Haynes converted two tough post moves in the paint to put the Blue Streaks at a comfortable 57-50 advantage with 9:57 to play. From that point on, the weary Tigers could draw no closer than four, as John Carroll claimed the 2008 Holiday Hoops Tourney title with a 78-67 victory over Hampden-Sydney at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. more...
 | | Turner King dropped in 29 points and snagged eight rebounds to lead the Tigers past LaGrange 90-68. H-SC will face John Carroll in the Holiday Hoops Tourney title game. | Tigers Advance to Title Game With 90-68 Win Over LaGrange (December 29, 2008) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--Hampden-Sydney junior shooting guard Turner King poured in a game and season-high 29 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 90-68 triumph over visiting LaGrange College in the opening contest of the 2008 Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament. Hampden-Sydney (5-4) took full advantage of a wealth of opportunities, turning 24 Panther turnovers into 27 points and recording 18 second chance points courtesy of 11 offensive rebounds. Hampden-Sydney shot 54.8 percent for the game and outrebounded the Panthers 35-28. The Tigers will vie for their second straight Holiday Hoops Tournament title when they square off with John Carroll (5-4), who defeated Hood College 92-68 in the nightcap. more...
 | | Turner King recorded a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the Tigers' 57-54 victory over Maryland Bible. | Tigers Close With 22-9 Run, Ground Eagles 57-54 (December 20, 2008) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--For the first 38 minutes of their tilt with Hampden-Sydney at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium, Maryland Bible College played with the lead. Problem was, the two minutes that the Eagles did not hold an advantage over the Tigers happened to be the final two of the game. Hampden-Sydney closed the final 13:06 of the game with a 22-9 run to erase a 10-point second half deficit and earn a hard-fought, 57-54 victory over the visitors from Baltimore, Maryland. Turner King paced the Tigers once again with game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, but a handful of Tigers made big plays down the stretch to help secure the win. Hampden-Sydney rebounded from a tough shooting first half (11-for-32) with 54.2 percent (13-24) shooting in the second half. The Tigers were just 4-for-24 from three-point range, but forced 15 Eagles turnovers. Jonathan Mudd tallied eight points and four rebounds for Hampden-Sydney while John Barker chipped in with six. more...
