 | | Turner King continued his hot shooting, pouring in 22 points to lead the Tigers past LaGrange, 83-72. | Hot Shooting Propels Tigers Past LaGrange, 83-72 (November 22, 2008) LaGRANGE, GA--Hampden-Sydney head basketball coach Dee Vick shared the same sentiment with his assistants, players and Tiger fans everywhere: it was about time. Led by the tremendous play of Turner King and Shane Payne, Hampden-Sydney collected its first victory of the season with an 83-72 decision over previously unbeaten LaGrange College in the final game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. King led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Payne followed close behind with a career-high 21 points in addition to pulling down six rebounds, dishing out three assists, blocking two shots and recording one theft. Junior Jonathan Mudd was one rebound shy of a double-double, notching 11 points and nine rebounds. Lane Medlin tallied a season-high 11 points and grabbed three boards. more...
 | | H-SC's Shane Payne scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in the Tigers' 59-58 loss to Maryville. | Late Rally Falls Short as Maryville Tops Tigers, 59-58 (November 21, 2008) LaGRANGE, GA--Turner King tallied a game-high 24 points and swingman Shane Payne scored 10 points and snared four rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Hampden-Sydney dropped a tough 59-58 decision to Maryville College (Tenn.) in the opening contest of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by LaGrange College. The Tigers, who drop to 0-2 on the young season, have lost their two games by a combined two points. A scrappy Hampden-Sydney bunch nearly erased a five-point deficit with 40 seconds to play. After Maryville's Eryk Watson sank two free throws to put the Scots ahead 57-52, Tigers' sophomore guard Matt Partsch drained a triple from the top of the key to bring H-SC within 57-55 with 24 seconds remaining. On Maryville's ensuing possession, Payne intercepted a cross court pass and threw it ahead to Jonathan Mudd, who was unable to convert a difficult, contested runner over a Maryville defender with 10 seconds on the clock. The Scots collected the rebound and proceeded to nail both free throws, giving them a 59-55 edge with four seconds to play. Payne's three-pointer as time expired accounted for the final 59-58 score. more...

Voorhees College's Calvin Harris knocked down a tough baseline jumper in the waning seconds to send the visiting Tigers to a 50-49 victory over Hampden-Sydney (0-1) in its season opener. Turner King's 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 accuracy from three-point range, paced Hampden-Sydney. Sophomore Shane Payne turned in a solid performance with eight points and six rebounds, as did Jonathan Mudd, who tallied five points, four rebounds and a team-high three assists. Hubert King led Voorhees (2-1) with 12 points and three boards while Harris registered 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Tigers. more...
Hoops Tigers Tabbed Fourth in ODAC Preseason Poll (October 30, 2008) SALEM, VA--With four new head coaches set to peruse the sidelines during the 2008-2009 basketball season, this year's annual ODAC Men's Basketball Media Day served as a standard meet and greet session. The respective hardwood rosters of ODAC schools also follow the "Who's Who" trend, as graduation stripped the services of a handful of all-conference performers and household names across the league from one year ago. Amidst all the change and novelty, Hampden-Sydney's newest pride of Tigers settled into the fourth position in the 2008-2009 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. Randolph-Macon, ranked No. 14 in the D3hoops.com preseason top-25, claimed the conference's top spot with 10 of 11 possible first place votes. Virginia Wesleyan, ranked 22nd by D3hoops.com, followed in second place with one first place vote while defending ODAC champion Guilford College checked in at third. more...
