H-SC Basketball Enjoys Huge Turnout to Alumni Weekend
(May 8, 2009) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--The Hampden-Sydney basketball program recently had its 1st Annual Hoops and Holes Weekend that was highlighted by the Friday night alumni basketball game. The game featured the sixty-plus graduates that came back including 16 All-ODAC selections, two ODAC Players of the Year, three All-Americans, eight 1,000 point scorers, and the only 2,000 point scorer in Hampden-Sydney history. The current players got to see the roots of the Hampden-Sydney basketball Tradition of Excellence, as the alums played a close, competitive game. The recent graduates of the current seniors along with the classes of 2008 and 2007 took on the rest of the group. The recent standouts Mike Edwards, Matt Green, Tyler Murray and Troy Kaase, along with the 2009 senior class, had a daunting task ahead of them facing the giants of Hampden-Sydney basketball. They were pitted against the likes of two-time All-American and Hampden-Sydney all-time leading scorer Russell Turner, All-American and the Tigers' leading three-point shooter T.J. Grimes, All-American and the Tigers' sixth-leading scorer Nate Schwab, and the third-highest assist and second-highest steal man Tee Jennings. more...

Dr. Christopher Howard Named 24th President of H-SC
(April 14, 2009) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--In recent decades, Hampden-Sydney College has become one of the most successful athletic programs in all of NCAA Division III athletics, continuously breaking barriers and bringing in some of the best and brightest individuals to be a part of its close-knit community. The College's latest choice in president certainly follows that trend by once again breaking the mold. On July 1, 2009, Dr. Christopher B. Howard will become the 24th President of Hampden-Sydney College, becoming one of the youngest college presidents in the United States. He will also be the first African-American to hold the College's most prominent position. Dr. Howard comes to Hampden-Sydney from Oklahoma University, where, since 2005, he served as Vice President for Leadership & Strategic Initiatives as well as Director of the Honors College Leadership Center and a President's Associates Presidential Professor. To say that Dr. Howard's resume is impressive would be a tremendous understatement. A distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Dr. Howard earned his BS in political science and starred on the gridiron as well, earning All-America honors in football. As a Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Howard earned his Doctorate in politics at Oxford University and an MBA with distinction from the Harvard Business School. more...

Members of the Hampden-Sydney basketball team helped build two houses as part of the Blitz Build by Habitat for Humanity.
Hoops Tigers Lend Helping Hand With Habitat for Humanity
(April 14, 2009) FARMVILLE, VA--Hampden-Sydney's basketball team enjoys the rare Division III luxury of playing within a community that shows its unconditional support every time the Tigers step on the hardwood at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. While the feeling of playing in front of the Farmville area crowd is a wonderful experience, the Tigers recently participated in a project for the Farmville community that is unquestionably more rewarding. Last week, members of the Hampden-Sydney basketball team took part in the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build, a dual project that set out to finish one Habitat house and build from scratch another for a pair of Farmville families. "It was truly a great experience to work hard with my basketball teammates, friends and community while having a great time and giving back to the local community, which continuously supports our program," said Tigers' senior captain Fitz Robertson, who just finished his term as Hampden-Sydney Student Body President. In two full working days, Tiger players, with the help of over 200 other volunteers, took the two homes from their flat foundations to sturdy structures with walls, heating and cooling units and shingled roofs. more...

(April 13, 2009) NEWPORT NEWS, VA--Hampden-Sydney junior guard Turner King has been named to the College Division Men's Basketball first team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) in the organization's all-state selections announced Monday afternoon.
