King records first double-double of season as H-SC improves to .500 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (December 20, 2008)—For the first 38 minutes of their tilt with Hampden-Sydney at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium, Maryland Bible College played with the lead. Problem was, the two minutes that the Eagles did not hold an advantage over the Tigers happened to be the final two of the game. Hampden-Sydney closed the final 13:06 of the game with a 22-9 run to erase a 10-point second half deficit and earn a hard-fought, 57-54 victory over the visitors from Baltimore, Maryland. Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) paced the Tigers once again with game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, but a handful of Tigers made big plays down the stretch to help secure the win. Despite methodically crawling back into the game after trailing 45-35 with 13 minutes to play, Hampden-Sydney still trailed Maryland Bible 54-47 at the 5:00 mark following Eagles' guard Terry Hosley's ninth field goal of the game. But King drilled a three on the Tigers' ensuing possession off a pass from John Barker (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) then took a Lane Medlin (West Point, VA/Fork Union) post feed and converted for two points to bring Hampden-Sydney within 54-52 with 4:08 to play. Hampden-Sydney forced an Eagles turnover on the defensive end and then used a Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) lay-up in traffic to draw even for the first time since the 5:40 mark of the first half. Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan) was fouled on a three-point attempt after another Maryland Bible turnover and connected on 1-of-3 to give Hampden-Sydney its first lead of the game, 55-54, with 1:40 to go. Hosley, who led Maryland Bible with 22 points, missed a difficult jumper on the Eagles next possession, and the Tigers made the most of the opportunity, as Medlin ducked and dodged his way for his only field goal of the game, extending the Hampden-Sydney lead to 57-54 at the 0:59 mark. A Hosley missed three-pointer and batted rebound attempt on the final possession of the game closed the book on the Eagles, allowing Hampden-Sydney to enter the holiday break with a 4-4 overall record. Hampden-Sydney rebounded from a tough shooting first half (11-for-32) with 54.2 percent (13-24) shooting in the second half. The Tigers were just 4-for-24 from three-point range, but forced 15 Eagles turnovers. Mudd tallied eight points and four rebounds for Hampden-Sydney while Barker chipped in with six. Maryland Bible placed three players in double figures; Hosley, Kevin Green (11 points) and Michael Simon (10). Both Green and Simon snagged six rebounds each. The Tigers will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, December 29 and 30 in the Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament, which feature LaGrange College, Hood College (Md.) and John Carroll. H-SC will tip-off the tournament with a 5:00 pm contest with LaGrange on the 29th. www.hsc.edu/athletics |
