HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (November 15, 2008)—The Dee Vick era of Hampden-Sydney basketball tipped-off with all of the anticipated drama, but fell just short of the desired result.

Voorhees College's Calvin Harris knocked down a tough baseline jumper in the waning seconds to send the visiting Tigers to a 50-49 victory over Hampden-Sydney (0-1) in its season opener.

Behind the strong play of junior guard Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic), the Tigers built an eight-point lead with 8:12 to play in the second half following a King layup. With the momentum tilting toward Hampden-Sydney, Voorhees managed to mount a mini 7-0 run over the next two minutes to draw within one at 41-40 with 6:05 remaining.

The teams subsequently traded baskets, but Voorhees (2-1) held a slight 45-44 lead with just under three minutes on the clock before King struck again, this time with a clutch three-pointer giving Hampden-Sydney a 47-45 advantage with 2:05 left.

A Hubert King three-point play returned the lead to Voorhees at 48-47 with 44 seconds remaining, but junior guard Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) connected on two cold-blooded free throws to put the Tigers back in front, 49-48 with 35 seconds to play.

On Voorhees' ensuing possession, Harris dribbled the shot clock to under ten seconds before driving to his left and pulling up at an awkward angle near the baseline. Over an extended hand, Harris buried the attempt with just six seconds to play putting Voorhees in front for good, 50-49.

Byron Lawton's (High Point, NC/Wesleyan) last second floater bounced around the rim and dropped out into the hands of Jyri Laakso (Oulu, Finland/Makelinrinne), whose tip-back attempt also came up empty.

Hampden-Sydney rallied from an early 21-14 first half deficit, closing the opening stanza on a 10-5 run to crawl within two, 26-24 at the break.

But turnovers proved costly throughout the contest, and Hampden-Sydney was ultimately unable to recover from its 21 miscues on opening night.

Hampden-Sydney out-rebounded Voorhees 34-28 and held the visiting Tigers to 39.6 percent (19-48) shooting for the contest. The Tigers got to the free throw line 26 times as opposed to Voorhees' nine trips, but managed to connect on just 17 of those opportunities for 65.4 percent. Hampden-Sydney shot 35 percent (14-40) on the evening.

King's 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 accuracy from three-point range, paced Hampden-Sydney. Sophomore Shane Payne (Weston, FL/Sagemont) turned in a solid performance with eight points and six rebounds, as did Mudd who tallied five points, four rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Hubert King led Voorhees with 12 points and three boards while Harris registered 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney will begin a five-game road trip on Friday and Saturday, November 21-22 when it travels to LaGrange, Georgia to compete in the LaGrange Tip-Off Tournament. The Tigers will take on Maryville College at 6 pm on Friday night.
