Roanoke, Virginia native prepares to lead Tigers against Maroons Friday night SALEM, VA (February 26, 2009)--Hampden-Sydney junior guard Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) was honored with his second consecutive All-ODAC first team nod Thursday night at the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference awards banquet held at the Salem Civic Center. The Roanoke Catholic alumnus averaged 18.0 points and 5.3 rebounds-per-game in 2008-09 while leading Hampden-Sydney in scoring in 15 of the Tigers' first 18 contests and and in 18 games overall. King is shooting 37.1 percent from beyond the arc, 80.6 percent from the free throw line and paces the team in steals with 25. The fluid lefty surpassed the 1,000-point plateau against Lancaster Bible in Hampden-Sydney's seventh game of the season, and currently sits in 10th place on Hampden-Sydney's all-time scoring list with 1,332 points, six points ahead of 2008 Tiger graduate Drew Prehmus. He needs just 69 points to move into ninth place ahead of Dave Trumbower '71. King hopes to begin his journey toward the ninth spot on the Tiger scoring charts when his sixth-seeded Tigers tangle with No. 3 Roanoke College in the last of Friday's quarterfinal match ups at 8:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center. He is averaging 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds against the Maroons this season. King was the only Tiger to be named to an all-conference team. Joining King on the first team was Eastern Mennonite's George Johnson, Guilford's Clay Henson and Tyler Sanborn, Roanoke's Curtis Peery and Randolph-Macon senior point guard Justin Short, who garnered ODAC Player of the Year accolades. Guilford head coach Tom Palombo was tabbed ODAC Coach of the Year after guiding his Quakers to a 21-4 overall record, 14-2 record in the ODAC and the top-seed in the this weekend's tournament. Randolph College forward Derrick Woods-Morrow was honored as the ODAC Rookie of the Year and Washington and Lee's Ben Heller was named the 2009 Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
