Former EMU, Shaw assistant adds experience, enthusiasm to Tiger program HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (July 11, 2008) - The final member of the newly renovated Hampden-Sydney basketball coaching staff was secured today when Athletics Director Joe Bush and Tiger head basketball coach Dee Vick announced the hiring of Larry Blunt as assistant basketball coach. Blunt, who comes to the Tiger program after spending two years as an assistant at Division II Shaw University of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), brings a wealth of coaching and recruiting experience to The Hill. Aside from his traditional assistant coaching duties, Blunt will be charged with monitoring academic progress, assisting with weight training and conditioning programs, and recruiting student-athletes to Hampden-Sydney. "We are very excited to have Larry Blunt join the Hampden-Sydney family," said Vick. "He brings a high level of enthusiasm and passion to our program. Larry is skilled at building positive relationships and he will be a terrific representative of the College on the recruiting trail." A native of Courtland, Virginia, Blunt was a two-year letterman in football at Elizabeth City State University before transferring to James Madison University where he completed his collegiate career. Blunt graduated from James Madison in May 2005 with a degree in Public Administration. Upon graduation, Blunt served as an assistant basketball coach at Eastern Mennonite University during the 2005-06 season before leaving Harrisonburg for Raleigh, North Carolina and Shaw University in 2006. Blunt was instrumental in all aspects of the coaching process at Shaw, including the recruitment of an ACC and SEC transfer to the Bears' roster. Shaw University also competed in the same, highly competitive conference as perennial Division II powerhouses Virginia Union University and Virginia State University. Blunt shares the same excitement about beginning his Hampden-Sydney career as Coach Vick and the athletic department possesses in welcoming such a talented young coach to the Tiger family. "I am very appreciative and excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Vick at Hampden-Sydney College," Blunt said. "I have a great respect for the tradition of Hampden-Sydney College, both academically and athletically, and will do my best to represent the College with the utmost pride, dignity and respect." -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
