H-SC Hall of Fame head coach Tony Shaver highlights evening's attendees HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 2, 2008) - In just over two weeks, the Hampden-Sydney Roundball Club will host the Third Annual Tip-Off Banquet at The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond. The event slated for Friday, October 17 is the first opportunity for Tiger basketball fans to meet and greet new Hampden-Sydney head coach Dee Vick '94 and his talented staff as well as rub shoulders with the 2008-2009 Hampden-Sydney basketball team. The Tip-Off Banquet has always been a rousing success, only this time, Vick and the Tigers will be accompanied by a familiar face to all Tiger faithful. Current William and Mary head coach and Hampden-Sydney Hall of Fame inductee Tony Shaver will be attendance in 2008 to introduce the new Tiger leader and help pass the torch to Vick and his new breed of Tigers. Hampden-Sydney's all-time leader in wins (358) and winning percentage (.747), Shaver has now become one of the top coaches in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), a premier mid-major Division I league. Last season, Shaver led the Tribe to its first CAA championship game appearance and nearly secured William and Mary's first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. Shaver's Tribe won 17 games overall, the sixth-best win total in program history, while William and Mary claimed 10 CAA victories for only the second time in the program's 23 years in the conference. For his efforts, Shaver garnered CAA Coach of the Year honors, becoming just the third Tribe coach to earn the award. Shaver's appearance is just one of the highlights of what promises to be an exceptional evening of fellowship and Tiger pride. College President Dr. Walter M. Bortz III, Roundball Club President Dave Wilson and Hampden-Sydney Athletics Director Joe Bush are three additional headliners scheduled to speak at the event. There are a very limited amount of tickets still available for the Third Annual Tip-Off Banquet. Tickets are priced at $50. Those still interested in attending should contact the Hampden-Sydney athletic department at 434-223-6151. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
