TIGERS HOLD ON FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT, 81-72 OVER WAU

Senior Turner King records first double-double of the season with 19 and 10

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 31, 2010)—Hampden-Sydney continues to roll recording its fifth straight win with an 81-72 victory over Washington Adventist University. Despite a slow start, the Tigers offense was clicking with three players in double figures. Senior Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) led the way with his first double-double of the season scoring a game-high 19 points while pulling down 10 rebounds.

Neither team could find the bucket early as Branden Washington scored the first points two and a half minutes into the contest. The Shock's lead last for about a minute until Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) hit a three to put the score at 3-2. The Tigers then went out to a 9-4 to take a 12-6 at the 13:45 mark.

Two Shock buckets made it a two point game, but a Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) lay up propelled the Tigers to a 11-1 run to take a 24-11 lead.

Washington Adventist slowly chipped away and back-to-back treys by Shane Brown cut the Tiger lead to just two with 5:35 remaining. After a King lay up, Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) hit a three and Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) knocked down two free throws  to put the cushion at 33-24.

After a Darrick Williams lay up, Brown hit another three to put the Shock within three. Hampden-Sydney, however, scored the final four points of the half to take a 37-29 lead at the break.

The two teams traded baskets to start the second stanza with the Tigers retaining a sizeable lead until the Shock scored nine unanswered points to take a 53-51 lead at the 13:20 mark, which was the first lead since 2-0.

King reclaimed the lead for his squad with a lay up and the foul, putting the Tigers up 55-54 with just over 11 minutes to play. An Antonio Ortega triple gave the Shock the lead back. The game went back and forth over the next four minutes before a George lay up gave the Tigers a 63-61 lead they would not relinquish.

The Tigers slowly built their lead up in the final five minutes to take their fifth consecutive win, which is the longest streak of the season.  

On the day, Hampden-Sydney was 25-51 (49%) from the field and 9-20 (45%) from beyond the arc. Washington Adventist struggled shooting and was just 28-73 (38.4%) on the day and 9-27 (33.3%) from deep.

King led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while George scored 17 points and snared eight caroms. Jessee notched 14 points, while freshman Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) dished out a career-high seven assists.

The Shock were led by Jamie Newton who scored 13 points, while Antonio Ortega, Branden Washington and Shane Brown all had 12 points each. Washington also had 12 boards. 

The Tigers dominated the boards outrebounding Washington Adventist 42-33. 

The Tigers return to action this Wednesday, February 2 as they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to face #2 Guilford College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
