HOOPS TIGERS PICKED FIFTH IN ODAC PRESEASON POLL

Guilford tabbed top team after 2009 Final Four run

SALEM, VA (October 29, 2009) -Hampden-Sydney has been picked as the fifth place in team in the ODAC's preseason coaches poll announced yesterday in Salem, Virginia. The Tigers return eight letter winners and three starters from a season ago in which they finished seventh in the ODAC while reaching the conference semifinals.

Guilford, ranked No. 3 in the D3hoops.com preseason top-25, claimed the conference's top spot with 10 of 11 possible first place votes. Virginia Wesleyan, the defending ODAC champions, and Randolph-Macon, ranked 19th by D3hoops.com, followed in a tie for second place with the Marlins receiving one first place vote while Eastern Mennonite rounded out the top four.

The Tigers enter 2009-10 with the bulk of their productivity returning, while adding nine new faces to the roster. The ODAC will get its first taste this season of what head coach Dee Vick can do in the offseason with his first recruiting class making their debut.

Hampden-Sydney senior guards Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) and Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) have been tabbed to lead the latest Tiger hoops squad as captains.

Two-time First Team All-ODAC selection King returns for his final campaign having already eclipsed the 1,000 point marker while standing tenth all-time on the Hampden-Sydney scoring list with 1,363 points. Last season, King ranked fourth in conference with 17.8 points-per-game and eleventh in rebounding with 5.5 boards-per-game. 

Mudd returns for his second season with Hampden-Sydney after averaging 6.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists-per-game in his inaugural season. The Miami, Florida native started in 22 of his 28 appearances last season while serving as both a point and shooting guard.

Hampden-Sydney opens the season on the road as they travel to High Point, NC to face the Division I Panthers of High Point University on November 21. Tip-off is schedule for 7:00 pm. The Tigers' home opener in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium is on November 28 when they square of with North Carolina Wesleyan in the first game of the South Region Hoops Challenge at 5:00 pm.
