Assistant
Basketball Coach
Austin Shaver
Austin Shaver will partake
in his first season as assistant basketball coach at Hampden-Sydney. Shaver
joins the Tiger staff after serving one year as a graduate assistant at Virginia
Commonwealth University under Rams' head basketball coach Anthony Grant.
Shaver, who hails from
Hampden-Sydney, not only comes from a talented coaching pedigree, but also
brings several years of valuable experience to the program. Although young,
Shaver has been extremely busy amidst the coaching scene for the past two years,
coaching everywhere from the high school level to AAU competition and the
Division I ranks.
Shaver graduated in 2007
from the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology. During his senior
year at UVA, Shaver was an assistant coach at perennial Virginia Independent
Schools power Miller School while also serving as a head coach for the East
Coast Fusion AAU program. Shaver has also worked with the touted Boo Williams
AAU organization that consistently develops the top basketball talent in the
state of Virginia.
This past year, Shaver
joined the VCU SportsCenter graduate program and worked as a graduate assistant
for the Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion Rams and Coach
Grant. His eye for top-tier talent is sharp, as Shaver co-directed the 2008 VCU
SportsCenter International Showcase that brought in players fresh from college
as well as agents from professional teams looking to offer professional
contracts.
Shaver currently resides
in Hampden-Sydney.
