Dee Vick is in his first season as head basketball coach at
Hampden-Sydney. A 1994 graduate of The College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
psychology, Vick brings a wealth of coaching experience, both in Division III
and Division I, to the Tiger staff.
The Raleigh, NC native played four years of collegiate
basketball at Hampden-Sydney under Hall of Fame coach Tony Shaver, starting
three seasons at shooting guard. Vick helped the Tigers to a combined record of
79-31 (.718) during his four-year career, which included a pair of ODAC
championships and two appearances in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.
Following his graduation, Vick teamed up with Shaver in the
coaching ranks and led the Tiger hoops squad to an astounding 118-28 (.808)
record, four NCAA Division III Tournament berths and an appearance in the NCAA
Division III National Championship game in 1999, where the 29-3 Tigers
ultimately fell to Wisconsin-Platteville in an epic, double-overtime affair.
In 1999-2000, left Hampden-Sydney and spent two years as an
assistant at East Carolina University. In 2001-2002, Vick served as a special
assistant to Dave Odom at the University of South Carolina, the same season that
the Gamecocks advanced to the championship game of the National Invitation
Tournament (NIT). Following that season, Vick left Columbia for an assistant
position at the College of Charleston, where he helped guide the Cougars to a
25-8 record and berth in the NIT in 2002-2003.
Vick joined his former college coach at William and Mary in
2003-04, and with Shaver, was a vital asset to the recent rise of the Tribe
basketball program. In his final season on the Tribe bench, William and Mary
narrowly missed the first Colonial Athletic Association title in program
history, advancing to the CAA title game for the first time ever before falling
to George Mason University.
Vick and his wife, Krissy, have two daughters, Ellie (8) and
Sallie (7) and a son, Ran (5).
