Tigers Win VaSID Men's Sports Survey, Place Second Overall
(July 14, 2010) NEWPORT NEWS, VA--From start to finish Hampden-Sydney athletics had an outstanding year with not one losing record, compiling an overall record of 90-37-1 (70.3%) between football, soccer, basketball, baseball, lacrosse and tennis. Hampden-Sydney's winning percentage was the best in the men's division in the recent Virginia Sports Information Directors Association College Division All-Sports Survey. The survey ranks all 27 non-NCAA Division I schools in the state by overall winning percentage. The 70.3% winning percentage was helped in great part by football, soccer, and lacrosse who all had their best records in program history.  This past year marked the highest winning percentage in school history while it marks the first time Hampden-Sydney has won the men's division. While winning the men's division, the Tigers finished second overall, trailing behind Christopher Newport, which won 72% of all of its contests. Following the Tiger's in the overall percentage was Virginia Wesleyan (61.4%), Mary Washington (59.2%), and Lynchburg (59%). more...

Track Tigers Compete at Jopson Invitational
(March 27, 2010) BRIDGEWATER, VA--The Hampden-Sydney track team competed in their second meet in as many weeks today, participating at the Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College.  Senior JoJo Howard had a solid day for the Tigers, coming in 8th place in the 100 meters and 7th place in the 200 meters.  His 100 meter time was 12.37 seconds and his 200 meter time was 25.01 seconds.  Senior Grandin Howell took fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 4.90 meters, improving on his jump from last week by an impressive .32 meters.  Junior Jay Artis came in 7th place in the 3,000 meters, finishing in a time of 13:24.69.

Track Tigers Compete at Roanoke Invitational
(March 24, 2010) SALEM, VA--This past Saturday, Hampden-Sydney competed in a track meet for the first time in a number of years, participating in the Roanoke College Invitational at C. Homer Bast Track.  Hampden-Sydney finished in 5th place, with several Tigers turning in some impressive performances.  Senior JoJo Howard took 7th place in the 400 meters, turning in a time of 55.58 seconds.  Freshman Matt Stevens took 6th place in the 200 metes at 23.87 seconds and 5th place in the long jump with a leap of 5.64 meters.  Freshman Andrew Craver took 7th place in the 5,000 meters, clocking in at 18:17, and senior Grandin Howell took 8th place in the long jump with a jump of 4.58 meters.  Bridgewater College won the men's event with a total of 207 points. more...

Craver Competes in NCAA Regional
(November 16, 2009) Greensboro, NC--Hampden-Sydney cross country freshman Andrew Craver (East Bend, NC/Forbush) competed this past weekend at the 2009 NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships, finishing in 133rd place with a time of 32:03.  The mud-soaked race was won by Lynchburg's Ricky Flynn, who came in with a time of 26:10.  Emory University won the event, finishing with just 33 points.  Said Head Coach David Hodge, Andrew capped off a tremendous rookie campaign with a strong showing at Regionals, going up again some of the best runners in the nation.  I will be looking to him next year to be one of our leaders and help our team improve.” more...

XC Tigers Compete In ODAC Championship
(November 2, 2009) SALEM, VA--The Hampden-Sydney cross country team took ninth place at Saturday's ODAC Championship meet in Salem, VA.  The Tigers were led by freshman Andrew Craver, who finished in 29th place overall with a time of 30:13.  He was followed by senior David Burley, who came in 47th place overall with a time of 32:08.  Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers were junior Dan Isaacs, freshman Sam Smith, and freshman David Barrett, who finished in 51st, 52nd, and 54th places respectively.  Lynchburg College won the men's event with a total score of just 33 points.  The Hornets' Ricky Flynn was the top overall finisher, coming in at a time of 26:45, a full 45 seconds ahead of the next finisher.  Hampden-Sydney finished with 233 points, just two points behind eighth-place finisher Emory and Henry and only 12 points behind seventh-place finisher Eastern Mennonite. more...
