XC TIGERS COMPETE AT 2008 JOPSON INVITATIONAL

BRIDGEWATER, VA (March 22, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney cross country team opened up their spring season this past Saturday by competing in the 13th Annual Harry G. M. Jopson Track and Field Invitational held at Bridgewater College. This event marked the first of a brief three meet spring season for the Tigers as they look to prepare and stay motivated for the 2008 fall cross country campaign.

Sophomore Robert Melvin (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) and junior George Heeschen (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) ran well in the 5000m opening event, placing seventh and ninth, respectively. Both athletes recorded new personal records for the distance as Melvin crossed the finish line at 16:37.81 with Heeschen completing a 16:38.91 outing.

Also competing for Hampden-Sydney was the newest addition to the team, freshman Timothy Fisher (Millville, WV/Jefferson), who ran in the 400m and the 200m. Fisher placed tenth in the 400m with a time of 54.01 and fifth in the 200m with a time of 24.43.

The Tigers are set to compete again this coming weekend, Saturday, March 29, at the Asics Collegiate Invitational held at Liberty University.
