CLEMMONS NAMED DIVISION II/III STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

RICHMOND, VA (December 8, 2004)—Hampden-Sydney College senior running back C.W. Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) has been selected as the Division II/III Virginia Player of the Year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as part of the 2004 “Bullet” Bill Dudley Awards, presented annually to the most outstanding Division I and Division II/III college football players in Virginia.  Clemmons is the first-ever Tiger football player to earn the award, while Virginia Tech quarterback Bryan Randall earned the Dudley Award as the top Division I player in the Commonwealth.

Clemmons, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, established himself as the most prolific offensive player in the history of Hampden-Sydney football in 2004 as he ran for 1,098 yards on 193 carries (5.7 ypr) and caught 31 passes for 366 yards while racking up 13 touchdowns.  He became the first-ever Hampden-Sydney back to record consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons as he followed up his 1,187-yard performance from 2003.

He finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading rusher in Tiger football history with 3,771 career yards, while his 282 career points places him atop the all-time Hampden-Sydney and ODAC career scoring list.  Meanwhile, his 46 career touchdowns ties the ODAC career touchdowns record, set by Emory and Henry’s Oliver Jordan in 1999.

The senior chemistry major also earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III First Team honors, thanks to his outstanding performance on the field, along with his strong efforts in the classroom where he has posted better than a 3.25 cumulative grade-point-average.

Clemmons and Bridgewater’s Lawrence Frierson, who was selected as the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, were the finalists for the Division II/III award, which soon will have a different name from the Dudley Award.  Randall won the Dudley Award, named for late University of Virginia star “Bullet” Bill Dudley, over William and Mary’s Lang Campbell and Virginia’s Alvin Pearman.

The award winners were announced on Wednesday, December 8, at the Sheraton West Hotel in downtown Richmond.
