Ty Condrey, Josh Miller, Corey Sedlar and Andrew Sellers tapped for 2009 RICHMOND, VA (January 27, 2009)—Just months removed from another successful campaign on the gridiron, the focus of Hampden-Sydney football fans was recently repositioned toward a promising season next fall. Last Friday, Hampden-Sydney head football coach Marty Favret announced the names of the four players pegged to captain the 2009 Tiger squad. Fifth-year seniors Corey Sedlar (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Andrew Sellers (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) will join fourth-year players Ty Condrey (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) and Josh Miller (Stephen's City, VA/Sherando) as leaders of Hampden-Sydney team that will be in pursuit of a sixth Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship next season. The four players were introduced as the 2009 Tiger captains during the Second Annual Senior Dinner held at the Commonwealth Club of Richmond on Friday, January 23, an evening that honored the team's 18 seniors from this past fall. Amidst the celebration of the 18 tremendous careers that brought Hampden-Sydney its first ODAC title in twenty years during the 2007 season was the news that two of the Tigers' most productive players would be returning for one more run at a crown. Sedlar and Sellers, both seniors academically with one more season of eligibility remaining, have decided to return to Hampden-Sydney as fifth-year players and reassume their captainship of Favret's charges. In 2008, Sedlar passed for 3,601 yards, tops in the ODAC, and 23 touchdowns while breaking his own record for completions in a season with 279. His completion percentage of 62.7 was the highest in the league as Sedlar threw for over 400 yards on four different occasions, including a career-high performance of 489 yards against Huntingdon. In his two-year career as a starter, Sedlar has thrown for 7,027 yards and 47 touchdowns, and will almost certainly graduate as Hampden-Sydney's all-time leader in passing yardage, needing just over 1,600 yards to surpass J.D. Ricca's mark of 8,633. Sellers was a key member of a much improved Tiger defense, leading the squad in tackles with 73 and tying for the team lead with 8.5 tackles-for-loss. He has bounced back nicely from a knee injury that sidelined him for the entirety of his sophomore season and will once again anchor defensive coordinator Wes Dodson's defense at the linebacker position. New captains Condrey and Miller also figure to be headliners for Hampden-Sydney in 2009. Condrey, a product of Manchester High School in Chesterfield, Virginia, will return to the Hampden-Sydney defensive line after sitting out just about all of the 2008 season with a variety of injuries. The latest, a torn knee ligament, sidelined him from the midpoint of the season on, and opposing offenses will have his renewed aggressiveness and tenacity to look forward to in 2009. Miller, another one of Dodson's talented linebackers, closed out the 2008 season in style, tallying 16 total tackles (11 solo) in Hampden-Sydney's final game of the season against Randolph-Macon. He finished second on the team in tackles, behind fellow captain Sellers, with 70, recorded 5.0 tackles-for-loss, recovered three fumbles and picked off a pass. Hampden-Sydney opens the 2009 season in the friendly confines of Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, September 5 at 1:00 pm. www.hsc.edu/athletics |
