FIVE
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY ATHLETES NAMED VaSID ACADEMIC ALL-STATE
HARRISONBURG, VA
(August 14, 2008)—The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID)
recently honored 222 collegiate student-athletes for their performances
both in the classroom and in competition as the organization selected
the 2007-08 VaSID Academic All-State Team. Hampden-Sydney is proud to
recognize five of her own athletes who were bestowed this tremendous
honor.
2007-08 seniors Greg Danahy
(Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley), Phil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk
Academy), Andrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester),
Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) and Drew Smith (Richmond,
VA/Mills Godwin) have been named academic all-state performers for
this past athletic year.
-
Danahy, a
standout midfielder for the Tiger soccer squad, boasted a 3.61 GPA
in Psychology. The Roanoke native appeared in all 20 contests in
2007 while registering 11 points courtesy of three goals and five
assists.
-
Hage worked
between the pipes for the 2008 Hampden-Sydney lacrosse Tigers. A
Mathematical Economics major with a 3.56 GPA, Hage also started
every game last season, recording a 9.88 goals-against-average in
over 800 minutes of action.
-
Tennis standout
McLeod earned the academic all-state nod after posting a 3.79 GPA
while double majoring in Chemistry and Economics and Commerce.
McLeod was also named ODAC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the
Year in 2008 in addition to his second team All-ODAC recognition at
No. 6 singles.
-
Prehmus, a
four-year honorable mention All-ODAC hoops performer and 2008 Gammon
Cup recipient, finished his academic career with a 3.84 GPA in
English. The 2007-08 ODAC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the
Year averaged 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds-per-game in his final
campaign in the garnet and gray.
-
Sure-fire Hall
of Fame wide receiver Smith was just as accomplished in the
classroom as he was on the gridiron. Smith notched a 3.75 GPA in
Biology as a student while setting numerous receiving records on the
field, including the top mark for career receiving yards and
single-season receptions. His athletic efforts earned him 2007 ODAC
Offensive Player of the Year accolades.
The 222 total athletes selected represent the largest
group that VaSID has honored with the awards. Each Virginia institution,
including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA and independents, had the
opportunity to submit athletes to be honored. To be eligible,
student-athletes were required to have cumulative grade-point-average of
3.20 or better. All athletes are either starters or key reserves for
their team.
