TIGER GOLFERS TAKE NINTH AT CAMP LeJUNE INTERCOLLEGIATE

CAMP LeJUNE, NC (April 3, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team fired season best team scores of 299 and 293 over the Scarlet and Gold courses at Paradise Point Golf Course en route to a ninth-place finish at the 26-team Camp LeJune Intercollegiate Friday through Sunday.  Junior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) and freshman Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) led the Tigers with 19th place finishes individually. 

Kelly finished the two-day tournament with rounds of 76 and 69, while Boykin shot 73 and 72 as each finished at three-over, 145.  Freshman Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) finished at 153 after rounds of 72 and 81, while Andrew Mitakides (Dayton, OH/Centreville) finished at 157 (78-79) and Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished at 161 (88-73). 

Johnson and Wales University won the tournament with a team score of 568, followed by nationally-ranked Division III programs Oglethorpe (574) and Methodist (576).  Meanwhile, Barton College finished fourth at 577, tied with nationally-ranked Guilford.  Johnson and Wales’ John Stoltz tied for first with Barton’s Jon Wetton. 

Hampden-Sydney’s team score of 592 was second to Guilford among Old Dominion Athletic Conference program’s, while the Tigers bested Randolph-Macon (611), Virginia Wesleyan (627) and Lynchburg (634). 

The Tigers return to action April 14 as the team battles cross-county rival Longwood University in a two-day tournament at Longwood Golf Course in Farmville, VA.
