TIGER GOLFERS TAKE SECOND TO LONGWOOD AT LU INVITATIONAL

 

FARMVILLE, VA (April 15, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team took second-place to Longwood University at the annual Longwood Invitational Friday at the par 70 Longwood Golf Club.  The Lancers won the cross-county battle with a two-day team score of 576, while the Tigers finished at 601. 

Hampden-Sydney was paced by freshman Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox), who tied LU’s Trey Deal for top honors after posting consecutive rounds of 71 (142).  Boykin’s second round 71 was the low round of the day as he helped the Tigers to a second-day score of 295, one better than Longwood’s 296. 

Junior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) finished tied for fifth at 149 after rounds of 76 and 73, while freshman Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished eighth at 153 after shooting 79 and 74.  Freshmen Matt Treacy (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) and Dan Guzman (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s) each recorded their first rounds of the season as Treacy finished at 162 (85-77) and Guzman at 165 (80-85). 

The Tigers return to action in their final regular season match of the spring when the team travels to Lexington, VA, to compete in the Buck Leslie Memorial at Lexington Country Club, April 18-19.
