TIGER GOLFERS FINISH THIRD AT BUCK LESLIE MEMORIAL

LEXINGTON, VA (April 19, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team completed the 2005 regular season Tuesday with a third-place finish at the Washington and Lee/Buck Leslie Memorial at the par 71 Lexington Golf and Country Club.  Tiger freshmen Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) each recorded a top-ten finish as the Tigers finished with the best second day team score, 297, of the nine teams competing in the tournament. 

Combs finished the two day event in seventh-place with a total score of 151 after rounds of 78 and 73, while Shrader finished tenth at 152 after firing a 72 during the second round to follow up an opening round 80.  Freshman teammate Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) tied with junior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) as the two finished just outside the top-ten at 153 after shooting rounds of 74 and 79.  Freshman Matt Treacy (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers as he finished with a two-day total of 163 (85-78). 

Bridgewater’s Grady Ruckman won medalist honors as he finished at 146 after shooting 77 and a tournament-low 69.  Washington and Lee won the event as the Generals recorded consecutive team scores of 301 to finish at 602.  Bridgewater was second at 604, followed by the Tigers at 608, Liberty University’s “B” team at 610, and Randolph-Macon at 615.  Virginia Wesleyan (634), Roanoke (637), Apprentice (657) and Emory and Henry (682) wrapped up the team scoring. 

The Tigers will next compete in the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament at Olde Mill Golf Course in Laurel Fork, VA, April 23 and 24.
